' UNITED STATES PATENT "OFFICE;
' JoRDAnc. DAVIS, EPAMINONDAS P. DAVIS, ND DAVtDVV. DAVIS, on
MOUNT CALM, TEXAS.
WASHING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,409, dated May 29, 1883.
4 Application filed February 5,1883. (No specimens.)
Be it known that .we, J ORDAN G. DAVIS, EPAMINoNDAs P, DAVI and DAVID W. DA- VIS, citizens of the United States, residing at. Mount Ualm,,in the county of Limestoneand State of'Texas, have invented certain new and useful ImproVementsin a Composition of Matter to be Used as a Washing Compound or Detergent; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will-enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to detergent or Washin g com pounds for cleansing clothing, fabrics, &o., and the ingredients required to produce the new composition, and the mode of manufacturing the same, are hereinafter more particularly set forth.
We take of pure water, one (llgallon; white rock potash, one (1) pound; borax, one-quarter (ilpound; kerosene-oil, four (4) ounces; benzine, one-half (lonnce. These ingredients are to be thoroughly mingled, as follows: Place the-potash and borax in one gallonof water and boil until entirely dissolved. Then add the benzine and kerosene-oil in quantity as above stated, and again boil slowly until all the ingredientsare well mixed and thoroughly incorporated, when the compound is allowed to cool, and should be bottled for future use. We prefer to use'eitber the Babbitt or Victory brands of potash.
The directions for using our detergent .com pound are asfollows: The clothing or fabrics to be cleansed should be wetthoroughly with cold water, after which the surplus water should be removed by wringing, and thefabrics placed in a tub of hot soapsuds to which has been added one-half g) pint of the compound or detergent to eachthree (3) gallons of soapsuds, and the fabrics are allowed toremain in this mixture fifteen or twenty minutes, after which they are to be removed and replaced in a similar mixture of soapsuds and the deter; gent compound, and boiled. therein ten or twenty. minutes more, then removed and rinsed well in cold water. Badly-soiled garments should 'be soaked well before being boiled; and we desire especially to disclaim of May 31, 1870, which contains the following elements foreign to our composition, namely: Skim-milk, Sweet-oil, beef-tallow, magnesia, spirits turpentine, alcohol, and spirits of ammonia.
We claim as our invention- A detergent or cleansing compound com posed of kerosene-oil, henzine, borax, white rock potash, and'water, mixed, compounded, and applied in manner and proportionssubstantially as hereinbefore specified.
In testimonywhereof we aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
