Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIcE.
GEORGE P. COLE, OF JOHNSTOWN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ELIAB W. CAPRON.
IMPROVEMENT IN DETERGENT COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,990, dated September 11, 1877; application filed August 6,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. P. COLE, of Johnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleansing Compounds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it.
My invention relates to an improvement in cleansing compounds for clothes, cloth, silk, lace, or any fabric or article that has become soiled by grease or common dirt; and it con sists in the combination of ingredients, compounded in or about the proportions given below.
I take of spirits of ammonia, five ounces; Sal-soda, four ounces; borax, one-half of one ounce; bisulphide'ofcarbomone dram; quicklime, three ounces; mutton-tallow, six'ounces; chloroform, one-half of one ounce; rain-water, sufficient to make the whole three gallons.
In mixing these ingredients, I first take the lime and add one gallon of rain-water, and let it set until the lime is thoroughly slacked,
when the clear water is all dipped off; and to this clear water is added another gallon of rain-water. To this water add the sal-soda and borax, and, after all is dissolved, add the tallow, when the whole mixture is put over a slow fire until it is boiled down to about three quarts. After it is cold, hot rain-water is added to about one and one-half gallon, and, when lukewarm, the bisulph-ide of carbon, spirits of ammonia, and chloroform are all added, and the mixture is ready to be bottled. The bottles must be kept corked.
I claim A cleansing compound composed of spirits of ammonia, sal-soda, borax, bisulphide of carbon, quicklime, tallow, chloroform, and water, in or about the proportions specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of July, 1877.
GEORGE P. COLE.
