Description

252. COMPOSITIONS.
UNITED STATES Cross Reference Examiner WILLIAM JOHNSON, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m soAPs FOR WASHING AND BLEACHING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,756, dated April 14,1874; application filed 1 February 26, 1874. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JonNsoN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of .Soap; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of bleaching and washing soap, and consists in a soap which is prepared from (allow-soap, rosin-soap, borax, spirit of turpentine, and chlorinated soda, by mixing these ingredients together and treating them during the process of mixing in the manner substantially hereinafter described.
In carrying out my present improvement, I
take six hundred pounds of talloW-soap made by the cold process, and in order to neutralize the free alkali contained in this soap I out it up and spread it outwhere it will be exposed to the action of carbonic-acid gas until the free soda is converted into bicarbonatc, whieh absorbs all the glyeorine present in the tallow, thereby producing a perfect neutral glycerinesoap. I then take three hundred and fifty pounds of rosin soap and mix it with the above-named neutral glycerinc-soap by exposing the mixture to a gentle steam heat, and when in the form of a thick curd, at atempera- .ture of about 80 Fahrenheit, I add thirty pounds of powered borax, two gallons of spirit of turpentine, fourteen pounds of aqua 3.111l1l0 nia, and four pounds of liquid chlorinated soda,
or Labarraqnes liquid. After having crutched this mixture, and when the compound has become thoroughlyhomogeneous, I turn the same into frames to stand for six days, when the soap is ready to be cut into bars.
This soap has superior detergent qualities, and it can be used with great advantage .for washing and bleaching.
What I claim as new, and C :ire to secure by Letters Patent, is s 1. The within -describcd mode of treating tallow and resin soaps prior to combining the1u,the same consisting in removing the free alkali in the tallow-soap by subjecting it to the action of carbonic-acid gas to form a neutral glyeerinesoap, and then mixing such with rosin-soap and other suitable ingredients, such substantially as described 2. A soap formed by combining a neutral glycerinesoap produced from tallow-soap, as set forth, with a rosin-soap, f two being mixed and united wan borax, turpentine, ammonia, and chlorinated soda, substantially as described.
WILLIAM JOHNSON.
