. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. MOORE AND EDMOND A. WARREN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOOK FOR INDEXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,196, dated December 23,1890.
Application filed October 13,1890. Serial No. 868,014. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS J. MOORE and EDMOND A. IVARREN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Books for Indexes and other Uses, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in books for indexes and other uses, and is particularly well adapted for use in connection with telephones for the purpose of keeping a list at hand of such subscribers as it maybe desirable to more frequently communicate with.
A practical embodiment of our invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the book closed, as it appears when hung up out of use. Fig. 2 is a View of the same when open, as it appears in use, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the line no a: of Fig. 1.
The book may consist of a simple folio comprising a front and back cover hinged together and provided with spaces for names upon their inner sides, or it may have leaves inserted between the covers. In the present instance I have represented it as a simple folio comprising a front cover A and a back cover B, hinged together by a flexible strip a uniting two adjacent edges. The upper or head end of the back cover B projects a short distance above or beyond the upper or head end of the cover A, as shown at Z), and is intended to be inscribed with the subscribers name and his telephone number, so as to present the same to View when the book is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, as well as when it is open, as shown in Fig. 2. The subscribers name and telephone number will be preferably printed in pronounced type, which can be correctly read without hesitation.
It is also found convenient to provide the extended portion of the back cover 13 with eyelets b or other suitable fastening devices for sustaining the book within convenient reach when out of use.
The inner faces of the front and back covers are conveniently ruled off and indexed .by letters for the purpose of arranging the names and call-numbers of the several subscribers where they may be readily ascertained. To assist in directing the eye at once upon the group of names, beginning with any one of the initial letters, I find it desirable to arrange the group beginning with each succeeding initial letter to the right or left of the group'beginning with the preceding letter.
In order to secure the two covers in closed adjustment when outof use I provide aswinging catch, 0 pivot-ally secured atone end to the projected portion Z) of the back cover and adapted to swing over the upper corner of the front cover A, as shown in Fig. 1. The catch O is provided with a thumb-piece c struck up from its outer corner for convenience in operating it.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described book, comprising a front and back cover, the upper or head end of the back cover being projected beyond the upper or head end of the front cover, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described book, comprising a front and back cover hinged together, one of the covers being projected beyond the end of the other cover, and a device for securing the free edges of the covers together, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-described book, comprising a pair of covers hinged together, one of the covers being projected beyond the end of the other, and provided with columns of initial letters upon their inner faces, the groups of initial letters being arranged successively out of alignment, substantially as set forth.
