SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,889, dated December 16, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALFRED B. HELLER, of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in shoe-claspsg and it consists in the construction which will be fully described herein after.

The object of my invention is to provide a clasp for shoes or other objects which is cornposed of metallic strips, as hereinafterl shown and described, which are adapted and especially intended to be secured to t-he inside of a box.

Figure l is a plan View of a box having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2` is a vertical section of the same, the box being closed.

A represents aboX, in connection with which my invention is here shown, and which will preferably be made of pasteboard or other light and strong material, and which is adapted to be opened at its center, as shown in Fig..

Secured to the bottom of each half of the box in any suitable manner are a series of strips C, which are provided with the transverse loops or other projecting holding devices Lwhich extend upon the upper surface of the clasps D,which are held upon the upper face of the strips C by the holding devices I. The clasps D are bent upward between the devices I and given the shape shown, so'that shoes or other objects will be clasped between the projecting portions, as shown in dotted lines. The ends of the strips@ are turned backward, as shown, and the ends of the clasps D are passed through and clasped between these turned-back ends, as shown, by means of which the ends are neatly and firmly secured together. Ipreferably make the space between the projecting ends of the clasp too narrow to allow the shoes to be forced down into position, and hence the shoes must be inserted edgewise and then turned into position, and are removed in a similar manner. Then the invention is applied to a box, as here shown, there will be secu red to opposite ends of each half of the box a strip B, which projects into the opposite half of the box when the box is closed for the purpose of preventing the back parts or tops of the shoes from getting between the edges of the two halves of the box when it is closed, and thus interfering with the closing of the box.

The above invention is adapted to be sccured to the inner side of a box, as here shown, orto the inner side of a drawer, so that each pair of shoes is held in such a position that all of the shoes contained therein are instantly exposed to view as soon as the box or drawer is opened. This avoids the placing of the shoes loosely in drawers and boxes, as heretofore done, which necessitates the turning over and mixing up of the shoes to find the desired pair, and which tangles the strings, thus causing a loss of time in separating them. By this arrangement shoes can be shown with more satisfaction to the purchaser and salesman, as well as saving wear and tear upon the shoes. For convenience in handling the box will be provided with aliandle at one end, as shown.

Having thus described my invention, I claim l. A clasp for the purpose described, consisting of a strip having transverse loops and a strip which passes through the loops and has projecting port-ions between theloops to form clasps, substantially as shown and described.

2. A clasp for the purpose described, consisting of a strip having its ends doubled back upon itself, and a strip having projecting portions which form clasps and its ends secured between the doubled portion of the first said strip, substantially as described.
