MEDIGINB CASE. No. 3`89,621. Patented Sept. 18, 1888.

@Wmme of- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIS HENRY VARREN, OF JOHNSONVILLE, NEWr YORK.
MEDICINE-CASE.
z531121CIIEICATIO'N forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,621I dated September 18, 1888.
Application filed June B, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLrs HENRY WAR- REN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ohnsonville, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Medicine Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in medicine-cases; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the ciaims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a medicine-case embodying my improvements, the lid and hinged side of the same being open. Fig. 2 is a vertical trans verse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line x fr of Fig. 2. Fig. 4v is a detail perspective View of one of the vial-holders. g
A represents the box or ease, which is rectangular in form, and is provided in one side with a series of longitudinal ascending steps,v B. One side of the case is hinged thereto at its lowcredge, and the said hinged side C has its inner side upholstered, and is provided near its hinged edge with a iiange, D. The lid E of the case is hinged thereto, and the said lid is hollow and is provided with a longitudinal recess, F, and with a pair of shallow recesses orcompartments, G, which are covered by a hinged inner lid, H.
I represents a series of vial-holders, each of which is stamped from a single piece of sheet metal, one end of which is broadened, and the said broadened portion of the metallic sheet is bent to form an open semi-cylindrical holder or socket, K, having side wings or ears, K', and adapted to receive the lower end of the medicine-vial. The projecting arm of the me tallic sheet is first bent at rightangles at a point somewhat below the lower ends of the wings or ears to form a bottom loop, M, and from the said loop projects a tongue or guard, N, which is bent at right angles to the said loop and is arranged in a vertical position in front of the open side of the socket. The lower ends of the wings or ears being above the loop M, the latter has its' upper side en- -t-irely unobstructed to enable areceiving-strap to pass over said loops, as will be hereinafter described. The said holders are arranged in Serial No. 276,491. (No model.)
series on the ascending steps in the case and on the ilange D, and are secured in position thereto by means of the strips O of upholstering material, said strips passing over the loops M and being glued or otherwise secured firmly to the steps and iiange. When the vials are inserted in the sockets, the tongues or guards N bear against the outer sides ot' the vials and retain them firmly in place in the holders and prevent them from becoming accidentally dislodged therefrom. These tongncsN also prevent the holders from slipping out under the securingstrip O. The function of the longitudinal recess G at the inner side of the hinged lid is to receive the upper ends of the vials on the uppermost step, so as to enable the lid to be closed snugly over the top ofthe `case, as shown in Fig. 2.
i A medicine-case thus constructed is extremely simple, and enables the vials to be arranged very compaetly, thereby increasing the capacity of the case to a maximum extent.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The holder made from a single piece of metal and having the socket provided with side ears or wings, K', the loop M, arranged at right angles to the socket at the lower end thereof, and below the wings or ears, and the tongue N at the front end of the loop and at right angles thereto, substantially as described.
2. rlhe holder made of sheet metal bent to form the open socket having the ears or wings K', the loop M at the lower end thereof, below said ears or wings, and the tongue or guard N, arranged in front of the open socket, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the case, the vialholders arranged thereinA and having the nnobstrncted loops M at their lower ends, and the vertical guards or tongues at the front ends of the loops, and the strips O, passing transversely over said loops and secured to the bottom of the case, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I havehereto affixed mysign'ature in presence of two witnesses.
W ILLIS HENRY WARREN.
