. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M. HEAD, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
SNAP-CATCH FOR BAGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,331, dated December 9, 1890. Application filed June 14, 1890. Serial No. 355,418. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. READ, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lock for Bags, Pocket-Books, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and practical lock. for bags, reticules, pocket-books, &c., arranged to open with the same motion of the hand which is required in opening the jaws or parts of the bag or book to which it is applied; and my invention consists, principally, of a thumb-piece formed or provided with a latch and fitted in an opening, so that a recess or angle in the thumbpiece cmbracingthe edge of theopeningforms the pivot of the thumb-piece.
The invention also consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
- Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of a bag-frame having myinvention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is asectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3
is a detailed inside view showing the spring, and Fig. 4 is asectional view showingthe latch pivoted in the thulnbpiece.
(t represents the catch, which may be attached to the inner surface of a bag-frame jaw A or to a pocket-book or other object, and 1) represents the thumb-piece, which carries the latch c and which may be attached to the other jaw B of a bag-frame or to the opening panel or cover of a pocket-book or other like object. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the latch is secured firmly to or formed with the thumbpiece, which is of ornamental design and fitted in a slot or opening (1 in the frame, and is formed with a slot or recess e, which embraces the edge of the slot or opening, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to form the pivot. The thumb-piece is held in place b y the shoulderfand bow-spring h, secured to the latch, so that the ends of the spring act against the inner surface of the frame and normally hold the lock in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 4 the latch c is in angular form pivoted upon the pin 2 so that it may have an independent movement in looking. The upper end of the latch is arranged behind the lip i, so that when the thumb-piece is pressed outward the latch, will be disengaged from the catch, and a spring j may be placed in the thumb-piece behind the upper end of the pivoted latch to insure its ready action in closing the bag or book.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a frame, of a fastener consisting of a spring-acted latch having a thumb-piece and fitted in a slot in one member of said frame and fulcrumed on the said frame at the edge of said slot, the other member of said frame having a catch for engaging said spring'acted latch, substantially as described.
