L. s.. WARE. MUSTAUHE GUARD FOR DRINKING VBSSELS.
No. 441,911. Patented Dec. 2, 1890.
WITNESSES INVENT SS n1: mm Puma cm. mam-mum m-sunmmp. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL S. WARE, OF CAMDEN, NElV JERSEY.
MUSTACHE-GUARD FOR DRlNK'lNG-VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,911, dated December 2, 1890.
Application filed July 16, 1890. Serial No. 358,909. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LEMUEL S. W'ARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful MustacheGuard, of which the following isaspecification.
My invention relates to a removable mustache-guard applied to drinking-vessels when in use, and so arranged that when not in use it can be carried in the vest-pocket or otherwise put away.
On reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a cup to which the removable mustache-guard is applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the cup and guard, through the line a b, Fig. 2, together with the elastic springs, in heavy black lines, which clasp the sides of the cup and hold the guard in place. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the guard and also the springs, in heavy black lines, when not in use; and Fig. 5 is asectional view of the guard through the line a b, Fig. 2, and the elastic springs, in heavy black lines, folded and thrown back on the guard for convenience in putting away. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the hinge between the clamp and the guard-plate.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
A is the cup.
B is a mustache-guard of any shape, preferably as shown, fitted into the cup at or near its top edge for preventing the runstache of the drinker from dipping into the liquid of the vessel, which is drawn by the mouth through the opening a, Fig. 2, of the guard. in place by elastic or yielding clamped strips cl (1, which are fastened together at their top ends and pivoted to the guard at 6. They form springs that are kept closed together by The guard is removable, and is held the elasticity of the material coinposingthcni, and by embracing and elasping the surfaces of the cup hold the guard firmly in place, Fig. 3. Then the guard is removed from the cup, the clamps d d close together, as shown in Fig. 4, and are afterward folded back on the guard, Fig. 5, for convenience in carrying.
Other devices can be used for clamping the guard within the cup and still carry out the end and design of my invention, which consists of a removable mustache-guard, in combination with a drinking cup or vessel. I therefore do not confine myself to the shape and conformation of the guard, as shown, and to the clamps d d, but will use such as convenience or necessity may suggest.
I claim as my invention 1. A mustache-guard, substantially as described, consisting of a plate and the elastic clamps pivotally connected to the plate by horizontal pivot-pins, whereby the clamps are adapted to depend from the plate when in an operative position and to be folded upon said plate, as set forth.
2. A mustache-guard, substantially as described, comprising a fiat plate having the recess 0 in one edge thereof and the elastic clamps pivotally connected by horizontal pivots to the plate at the edge thereof and at opposite sides of the recess therein to enable said clamps to be folded upon the plate and to depend therefrom, as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a mustache-guard comprising a recessed plate and the foldable depending clamps having the elastic members and pivotally connected to
