IMPROVEMENT'IN SKEWERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,33l, dated June 23, 1874; application filed March 27, 1874.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM EARLE GAss, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skewers, or devices for securing meat and other articles of food in pla-tes, 8vo.; and I do hereby declare thatthe following specification, taken in connection with the drawing furnished, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.

My invention relates to devices suitable for attaching to platters, and other similar ves sels, generally used in connection with dinin tables, in which meats and other matters of a fleshy or vegetable nature may be placed; and it consists of a bar of any suitable shape, that may be attached to and rest within the vessel, having one or more spurs or pointed projections arranged thereon, having clamps or other means which may be controlled either with or without screws, for the purpose of adjusting and securing the same to the edges of the vessel to which it may be applied. The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and ettective device, that may be applied to or removed from the vessel at will, serving as a valuable assistant to an inexperienced Carver, which enables him to control the meat, &e., preventing the slipping which would otherwise occur to his inconvenience and discomfiture. It is a valuable application to various kinds of table-dishes used on board ships, 82e., to retain the articles within them in rough weather, &c.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a dish, in section, exhibiting my improvement in position; Fig. 2, top view of my device on a section of dish; Fig. 3, section of a center part of a bar with projections; Fig. 4, sections of end of bar, to which clamps may be secured by screw or other means 5 Fig. 5, face and edge views of clamps.

A represents the vessel or-dish, B, the bar; C, the clamps; D, projections or spurs, and E the screws. The bar is made of any suitable material, although iron will serve the purpose, and, when east and mademalleable, can be furnished very cheaply, may be nickel-plated or otherwise finished. Figs. 1 and 2 exhibit suitable proportions. These are represented as being hinged at points about one-third, more or less, of their length from the ends. This is done for a greater convenience of applying the same to deep dishes, although the bar may be so formed without joints that it will spring into position and conform to its place. The latter is more particularly applicable to the ordinary shallow dishes. For these (or the latter) the separate jaw c may be dispensed with. In this case the bar should be of sufficient length to extend over the edges of the dish, so formed, by bending or otherwise, as to embrace the edges, thereby retaining the same in position. For most purposes the adoption of separate jaws or clamps, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2, adjusted by means of thumb-screws, will or may be consi dered preferable. I would remark that those parts where the pressure is applied, which come in contact with the rim or edges of the dish, may be covered with any liexible material to prevent scratching, 83e. The bar may be straight and narrow, as shown iu Fig. 2, or as in Fie'. 3, or otherwise, Fig. l showing a suitable length of spur, which may be varied as desired.

I do not claim, broadly, projections within a dish, or other similar vessel, as I am aware that such haye been made hitherto with fixed points cast or molded therein, which prevents them from being readily cleansed. The object of my invention is to make an article of manufacture, which may be made indepei'ident of, and applied to, any similar vessel, capable of being detached at pleasure.

Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure Letters Patent of the United States for, is-

In combination with a plate or other dish, the adjustable pointed projections whereby the contents of said dish may be held for carving, substantially as set forth.
