SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,428, dated October 14, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY WELLs, residing at 35 Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy Square, London, England, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scarf-Retainers, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, N 0. 15,910, bearing date October 10, 1889,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in that description of scarf-retainers which consists of a stud furnished with a tongue forming a clip or hook, and has for its object to prevent the band of a scarf, necktie, or cravat working up above the coat-collar or otherwise getting out of position, as now so frequently occurs. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a front and Fig. 2 a side elevation of my improved scarf-retainer.

My invention consists of a disk (1, with a screw-threaded shank b, which together form a stud. A tongue 0, having a screw-threaded perforation d, is screwed onto the shank b, and secured thereon by a knob e, which is either formed on or fitted into the end of such shank, thus preventing the tongue working oif the shank.

The operation of my invention is as follows: Having screwed the tongue up to the knob, such tongue is inserted from the back into a hole made in the shirt-band, and also through the button-hole in the back of the collar. The band of the cravat, necktie, or scarf is then adjusted under such tongue, after which the tongue is tightened up and turned downward, thus forming a hook that holds the band between it and the base-plate, and so effectually retains such band in position.

My improved scarf-retainer may be worn either with turn-down or stand-up collars, but is more particularly adapted for the latter, as

in the case of turn-down collars the collar itself when folded over serves to keep the cravat in position.

The dotted lines in Fig. 1 indicate a portion of the band of a necktie clipped between the disk at and tongue 0. The disk at is made slightly concave on the inside,while the tongue 0 inclines obliquely toward the periphery of such disk and is provided with the projectshoulder presses into the material and pre-- vents the band from slipping down. The pressure of the side edges of the said shoulder against the band also prevents the tongue from turning around upon the stem and releasing the band.

I am aware that prior to my invention scarfretainers of a somewhat similar construction, having a fixed tongue forming a rigid book, have been made. I therefore do not claim this form of scarf-retainer, broadly.

What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A combined collar-button and scarf-retainer consisting of a disk provided with a screwthreaded shank, in combination with a tongue provided with an inclined side having a projecting shoulder at its upper part behind the said disk for hearing against the scarf-band, and a screw-threaded hole above .the said projection for engaging with the said shank, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
