GLAMP FOR WASH BASINS.
No. 435,715. Patented'Sept. 2, 1890.

WALTER LEW'IS SILVESTER, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
CLAMP FOR WASH-BASINS.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,715, dated September 2, 1890.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER LEWIS SIL- VESTER, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for VVash-Basins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a clamp device for holding washbasins in position on the under side of the apertured top or slab of a washstand; and my invention consists in the devices hereinafter set forth, and as more at length recited in the claims herein, whereby the objects hereinafter stated are attained.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a wash-basin and its slab or top, and showing my improved clamps for holding the former to the latter. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of one of my improved clamps, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same.
My improved clamp is composed of a body A, which has a horizontal and, preferably, plane top face a, and an upper jaw of, projecting upwardly from one side of the body at the top and inclined or angular to the top face a, together with a lower jaw a projecting somewhat downwardly from the same side of the body as the jaw a and at the bottom edge of the body. The said lower jaw a may, with the upper jaw a, be rigid on the body, as illustrated in the clamp A in Fig. 1, or, which is preferable, the said lower jaw a may be movable or expansible from the upper jaw on the body, to accommodate basin edges or rims of various thickness when applied thereto, as hereinafter set forth. The expansible lower jaw a as shown, may be given a fixed adj ustability on the body by being attached thereto by a binding-screw as a pivotal bearing, as at a and by having corresponding serrated faces a on the jaw and body meshing into each other.
In practical use, the upper jaw 0/ is seated in a corresponding recess 1) in the slab B, with the top face a of the body of the clamp resting against or seated to acorresponding face I) at the bottom of a part of the slab-recess b, as illustrated in. the clamp A. in Fig. 1, or to Serial No. 347,531- (No model.)
a corresponding face I) on the under side of the slab B, as illustrated in the form of clamp A in Fig. 1. Seated thus in the slab B the described clamp-one or more-is adapted to engage by the lower jaw 0/2 the flange c on the rim of the basin 0, and to sustain and hold the basin 0 in position below the aperture b in the slab on the under face of the slab. The clamp thus seated is provided with means for holding it, preferably detachably and adj ustably,-to its seat in or upon the slab B-as,for example, by a screw D passing through the body A and into the slab. I prefer to make the fastening-screw in the form of a thumbscrew, as shown, and to pass it through the body A in a direction substantially at right angles to the direction of the upper jaw a, as shown, so that it will project above the top a of the body at the opposite edge thereof from that 011 which is said upper jaw a, and with a similar incline or angle to the top face a, but in an opposite direction to that of the jaw a. It will be found desirable, for obvious reasons, to seat the screw D in a lug (1, formed on the body, as shown. The inclined screw is adapted to enter a corresponding seating-recess b in the slab B.
By means of a series of the described clamps a basin 0 may be detachably and firmly at tached to the aperture 1) in the slab without the employment of solder or lead to hold the clamp device to the slab.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A basin-clamp composed of a body A, having the jaws a and a and a screw D, working in said body and projecting therefrom in an upward direction diverging from the direction of the upper jaw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A basin-clamp composed of a body A, having the top bearing-face a and the jaws a and a and provided with a screw D, working in said body and projecting therefrom in an upward direction diverging from the direction of the upper jaw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A basin-clamp composed of a body A, having a rigid angularly-projecting upper jaw a and a fixedly-adjustable lower jaw a together with a screw D, working in said body IOO 10 edge thereof, and a thumb-screw D, working in said bodyin the direction at substantially right angles to the direction of the upper jaw and adapted to project beyond the upper edge of the body, substantially as and for the pn rpose set forth.
