AUGER-BIT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deep River, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auger- Bits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in auger bits and particularly to a bit having an adjustable cutting lip.
The object is to provide a simple and reliable bit which may be readily and accurately adjusted to cut holes of different sizes and which may be clamped securely in position so that it will not chatter or work loose or produce an irregular cut.
The accompanying single sheetof drawings illustrates the principles of the invention in one form.
It consists essentially in a bit having a solid head with a cutter adjustable in a passage-way through the head of the bit by means of a screw which is also located in a passage-way in the bit and clamped by means of a block and screw as hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1, is a front view or elevation of the head of a bit embodying the improvements of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are side views taken respectively from the left and right of Fi 1. Fig. 4, is an end view. Fig. 5, is a longitudinal sectional view through the axis of the bit but showing the cutter and adjusting screw in elevation. Fig. 6, is a vertical sectional view through the center of abit on the plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 5. Fig. 7, is a similar sectional view of the head showing the passage-ways and recesses without the cutter, adjusting screw and clamping device. Fig. 8, is a perspective view of a clamp block.
The head 1 has any suitable form of shank 2, screw tip or point 3 and cutting edge 41 at the lower end.
The cutter 5 is transversely adjustable in a passage-way 6. The passage-way 6 is so shaped and located that the cutter is inclined downward at a slight angle relative to the horizontal in the positions shown in the drawings so that the cutting edge comes out through the end of the bit adjacent the base of the screw tip 3 as shown in Fig. 1. The upper edge of the cutter has a series of teeth 7 which are preferably inclined as shown so Specification of Letters Patent.

that the adjusting screw 8 bears downward and to the right upon the cutter as viewed in Fig. 6. The passageway 9 for the screw 8 is parallel with the passageway 6 and in tcrsccts the same as shown in Fig. 7. The clamping block 10 fits nicely in the recess 11 which intersects the passageway 9 as shown by Figs. 5 and T. The block 1.0 has a lug or projection 12 which fits in an annular recess 13 in the screw 8. This block 10 also has inclined surfaces 14, 14: which bear against the outer surface of the threads of the screw 8. A screw 15 passes through the passage 16 in the block 10 and screws into the threaded portion 17 in the head of the bit. then the screw 15 is tightened up it draws the block 10 down into the recess 11 and forces the screw 8 into contact with the inclined edge 7 of the cutter 13 and clamps the cutter securely in place. hen the screw 15 is loosened the screw 8 may be turned so as to adjust the cutter 5 to cut the required size of hole. The lug 12 prevents the screw 8 from moving transversely in the passageway 9 and thus causes the cutter to be drawn along when the screw is turned.
The construction is essentially a solid head bit with the two passage- ways 6 and 9 intersecting one another. \Vhen the screw 15 is tightened up the screw 8 is clamped in place so that the cutter cannot work loose.
What I claim is 1. In an auger bit, a head having two inclined passage-ways extending therethrough and intersecting one another, a cutter longitudinally movable in one passage-way, a screw engaging the edge of said cutter, means for preventing longitudinal movement of the screw and means engaging the screw for clamping the screw and cutter in place.
2. In an auger bit, a head having two transverse passage-ways, a cutter movable in one of said passage-ways, a screw rotatable in the other passage-way, means for preventing longitudinal movement of said screw and means engaging the screw for clamping said screw against said cutter.
3. In an auger bit, a head, a transversely adjustable cutter having teeth along one edge, an adjusting screw engaging said teeth and having an annular recess, a clamp block having a lug projecting into said recess and a screw for clamping said block against said adjusting screw.
4:. In an auger bit, a head having a transversely extending passage-way opening through the end, a cutter in said passage-way having teeth along one edge inclined toward one side, an adjusting screw having its axis substantially parallel with said cutter and its teeth engaging the teeth of said cutter and means for clamping said adjusting screw.
5. In an auger bit, a head, a cutter transversely adjustable therein and having teeth along one edge, an adjusting screw engaging the teeth of the said cutter, a clamp block engaging said adjusting screw and a clamp screw coacting with said clamp block.
6. In an auger bit, a head having a transverse passage, a cutter and a screw'in said passage, said cutter having teeth along one edge engaged by the threads of said screw, a clamp block engaging said screw at a point substantially diametrically opposite the line of contact between said screw and said cutter and a screw extending transversely into said head and having a shoulder engaging said block to clamp said block against said screw and indirectly clamp said cutter in said passa e.
