Description
PATENTED FEB. 14, 1905.

BIT.
APPLICATION FILED IEB.10, 1904.
INVENTOR Patented February 14, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. SWAN, OF SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT.
BIT.
SI-ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,368, dated February 14, 1905.
Application filed February 10, 1904. Serial No. 192,945. v
To all whmn'it may concern:
Be it known that 1. WILLIAM B. SWAN, a resident of Seymour, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bits; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
- My invention relates to an improved bit, the Object of the invention being to provide an improved rapid-boring bit which is so constructed as to cut a smooth hole and rapidly feed itself forward.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar View taken from the opposite side to that from which Fig. 1
is taken. Fig. 3 is an end .view.
1 represents the shank of my improved bit, the lower portion of which being made spiral, as shown at 2, with flat outer face and rounded interior. The extreme end of the bit is made with a conical head, as shown at 3, and the cutting edge 4: thereof is curved, forming a forwardly-projecting sharp cutting-tooth 5 i to clear the wood, causing a much smoother hole. The end of the conical portion of the bit is formed into a screw 6 of conical formation and sharp edge, the edge of the screw merging into and forming a continuation of the sharp cutting edge 4, thus facilitating the rapid feeding of the bit into the wood and insuring a rapid bore.
- Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v A bit comprising a body portion terminating at its lower end in a conical head, said head having an inwardly-curved cutting edge terminating at its upper end in a tooth, the lower end of said conical head provided with a short screw having a portion which encompasses the apex of the head and extending a short distance upwardly from said apex, such short screw forming a continuation of the said inwardly-curved cutting edge of the conical head.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. B. SWAN.
