VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 24:, 1911.
Application filed .Tune 21, 1910. Serial No. 568,211.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM S. DU- oHARMn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johns-town, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Vise, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved construction of vise and more particularly an improved pipe vise and the invention aims primarily to provide a device of this type in which a pipe of any ordinary size may be readily disposed and quickly and firmly clamped with but little manual exertion.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the general construction and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a View in slde elevation of a pipe vise constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 4.- is a view similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating a slight modification of the invention.
In the drawings, the vise is illustrated as embodying in its construction a body 5 which is formed with a lateral wing 6 adapted to be disposed upon and secured to the top of a work bench or similar support. The body 5 is formed in its upper face with a channel 7 and the function of this channel will be presently explained. A jaw post 8 upstands from the upper face of the body 5 and the channel 7 and to opposite sides of this jaw post are secured jaw plates 9 which have their outer edges recessed as at 10. For a purpose to be presently explained, the body 5 of the vise is formed in its upper face, rearwardly of the jaw post 8 with an upstanding boss 11 and this boss 1s spaced from the said rear face of the jaw post as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The movable jaw 12 of the vise is formed with a shank 13 and is formed in its upper edge with rack teeth 14:. The shank 13 is fitted slidably in the channel 7 of the vise body and one wall of this channel is formed with a groove 15 into which groove projects .a stud 16 formed upon the corresponding side of the jaw shank 13.
A lever 17 is formed at its lower end with a plurality of teeth 18 and at its said end is inserted between the rear face of the jaw post 8 and the forward face of the upstanding boss 11. A pivot pin or fulcrum 18 is then driven through registering openings in the boss 11, the said lower end of the lever 17, and the upstanding jaw post. From an inspection of Fig. 3 of the drawin s it will be observed that when. the lever 1s swung down to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3, its teeth will clear the rack teeth 14 of the jaw shank, thus permitting the movable jaw to be shifted into engagement with a pipe or like object to be held. After this additional adjustment of the movable jaw has been accomplished, the lever is swung over in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3 of the drawings until it assumes about the position shown in full lines in the said figure it being understood that as the lever is so swung, its teeth 18 will come into meshing engagement with the rack teeth 14 and the rack shank of the movable jaw will be drawn rearwardly, causing the said jaw to firmly bear against and clamp the aforesaid pipe or other object to be held in the vise.
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be understood there is providcd a vise in which the initial adjustment of the movable jaw may be rapidly made and clamping adjustment or movement of the jaw accomplished with but little manual exertion owing to the leverage afforded by the lever 17.
The form of vise shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings is identical with that illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 except that whereas, in the said Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the rack shank 14C of the movable jaw is of a width less than the width of the two lower ends of the lever 17, in this latter form, shown in Fig. 4, the shank is considerably broader and a groove 19 of rack formation is formed in the upper face of the shank.
What is claimed is In a vise, a channeled body, a fixed jaw, upstanding from the body, the movable jaw having a rack shank slidably fitted in the channel of the body, a boss formed upon the body and spaced with relation to the said upstanding fixed jaw, a lever having its lower end disposed between said fixed jaw and said boss, the said lever at its lower end having a plane face and arcuate teeth adapted to mesh with the rack shank of the mov- 10 swung to another position its plane facevvill be spaced above the teeth of theshank to permit of free movement of the shank. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto al'l ixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.

able jaw, and a pivot pin inserted through the boss, the said end of the lever and the said fixed jaw, the distance between the said plane face of the lever and the pivot for the lever being less than the distance between the said pivot and the upper end of the teeth of the shank of the movable jaw, whereby when the lever is in one position it will mesh with the rack shank and when
