Description
F. W. DROSTEN.
ROLL PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
' No. 434,256. Patented Aug. 12, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK W. DROSTEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,256, dated August 12, 1890. Application filed November 28, I888- $erial No. 292,096. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. DROS- TEN, of the city ofSt. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Cutters, of Which'the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a front elevation of my improved machine. Fig. II is a side elevation. Figs. III, IV, and V are detail views showing modifications, Fig. V being a sect-ion taken on line V V, Fig. IV.
My invention relates to a device for holding and cutting wrapping-paper and the like, and relates particularly to an improvement on the patent granted to me on the 21st day of June, 1887, No. 365,334..
My present invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to thedrawings, 1 represents a suitable, base to which are secured end pieces or standards 2, having extensions or arms 2.
3 represents the roll of paper having journals 4, by which it is supported in the standards 2.
The extensions or arms have ways or slots 5.
6 represents the knife having a cuttingedge 7, and having projections S that fit in the ways or slots 5. The slots 5 may be vertical, as shown in Fig. II, or they may be inclined, as shown in Fig. III. At one side of the slot or way of each extension or arms are teeth or notches 9, and to them myinvention relates. The function of these notches or teeth is that of engaging the projections 8 of the knife to prevent the upward movement of the knife in cutting the paper. Thus, in the operation of the machine the knife moves downward by gravity as the size of the roll decreases, thus always bearing on the roll, and when an upward pressure is brought upon the knife in the act of cutting the paper the projections 8 of the knife engage the notches or teeth 9 of the ways, and all danger As stated, the ways or slots 5 may be ar-' ranged vertically or on an incline. They are shown on an incline in my patent referred to, and as another obvious modification the extensions or arms 2 may be made with parallel sides, as shown in Figs. IV and V, and the knife may be formed with openings providin g two lugs 8 on each end which embrace the extensions or arms, one side or face of each extension or arm being provided with the notches or teeth 9. The notches 9 may be made in one only or in both of the extensions or arms 2. The notches are particularly adapted for use in a machine for cutting heavy wrapping-paper.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with suitable standards for holding the roll of paper, of a gravitating knife adapted to rest upon the roll of.
paper and guided in its downward movement by toothed or notched extensions or arms with which the knife engages, and is prevented from moving upward While severing the paper from the roll, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the standards, a knife guided and held by the standards, and teeth or notches on one or both of the standards with which the knife engages, substantially as and for. the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the standards having slots or ways and teeth or notches, and the knife having projections fitting in the slots or ways and engaging the teeth or notches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4.. The combination of the standards 2,having notches or teeth 9, and the knife 6, having cuttingedge 7, and projections. 8, substantially as and-for the purpose set forth.
FREDERICK IV. DROSTEN.
In presence of- BENJN. A. KNIGHT, EDW. S. KNIGHT.
