ROLL PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
No. 460,036. Paten ted'Apnj,18 91.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS REIN, OF SI. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO TIIE AMERIOAN ROLL PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,036, dated April 7', 1891.
Application filed May 16, 1890. Serial No. 352,039. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS Rain, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Outters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which-- Figure I is a front elevation, and Fig. II is a side elevation, of my improved machine.
This invention relates to an improved rollpaper holder and cutter; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a base, to which standards or uprights 2 are secured.
3 represents the roll of paper having the usual spindle 4, with journals 5 fitting and working in vertical slots 6 in the upper ends of the standards 2.
7 represents a knife secured at the upper ends to the standards2 and extending across the machine, as shown in Fig. I.
8 represents cams (there are two at each end of the machine) pivoted to the standards 2 at 9, and which have inclined bearing-surfaces 10, that rest against the journals 5 of the spindle of the roll of paper.
11 represents springs connecting the lower ends of the cams to fixed points 12, one of the springs being connected at its upper end to a projection 13 on one of the cams Sand the other spring being connected to a projection 14 on the other cam 8.
The operation is as follows: The roll is placed in the machine and is held by the cams, under the influence of the springs, up against the knife 7. As the paper is removed from the roll and is decreased in size, the force of the springs acts to lift the roll by pulling the curved surfaces 10 of the cams against the journals 5 of the arbor 4:. The roll is thus constantly held against the knife, for as its size is decreased, permitting its upward movement, it is elevated by the pressure of the cams upon the journals of its spindle.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of suit-able standards, upwardlyextending slots or guideways in said standards, a roll of paper supported in said guideways, and a knife supported on said standards, with spring actuated cams bearing against the journal ofthe roller-spindle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of suitable standards and upwardly-extending slots or guideways in said standards, a knife supported across the top of said standards, anda roll supported in said guideways, with spring-actuated levers or cams bearing against the journal of the roller and tending to keep the periphery of the roll constantly in contact with the knife, substantially as herein set forth.
3. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of suitable standards, a knife secured to the standards, a rollof paper supported by the standards and adapted to have vertical movement therein, pivoted cams bearing against the journals of the spindle of the roller, and springs for actuating the cams, substantially as set fort-l1.
4. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of suitable standards slotted to receive the roll of paper, a knife secured to the standards, curved cams pivoted to the standards and bearing against the journals of the spindle of the roll of paper and provided with projections at its lower ends, and springs connected to the projections on the cams and to fixed points, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GUS'IAVUS REIN.
In presence of E. S. KNIGHT, Tnos. KNIGHT.
