G. K. PIGKLES. ROLL PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
No. 446,011. Patented Feb. 10, 1.891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
CI'IARLES K. PICKLES, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN ROLL PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,011, dated February 10,1891.
Application filed March 11, 1889. Serial No. 302,757. (No model.)
the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which F1gure l is a front elevation of my improved machine. Fig. II is a side view. Fig. III is a view of one of the connecting wires or rods.
My invention relates to certain improvements in machines intended more particularly for use in holding and cutting wrappingpaper and the like, but which may be used for other purposes; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a suitable base, to which are secured standards The standards 2 have extensions 3, upon which the journals 4: of the roll of .paper 5 bear. They also have extensions (5, provided withslots 7, in which the ends 8 of the knife 9 fit. The standards are also slotted, as shown at 10, to receive pins 11, that connect the lower ends 12 of wires or rods 13 to the standards. The wires or rods when in their normal position are of the shape shown in Figs. II and III, one arm of each wire or rod having an eye 14 to receive one of the journals of the roll of paper and the other having an eye 15 to receive one end 8 of the knife.
The operation is as follows: As the roll decreases in size it moves down upon the inclined faces of the projections 3. As it does so the wires or rods 1-3 gradually move from the position shown in full lines, Fig. III, toward the position shown in dotted lines, and the knife is thus automatically moved toward the center of the roll as the size of the roll of paper decreases.
It will be understood that as the roll decreases in size the knife is permitted to move toward the center of the roll, and it is compelled to thus move by the weight of the roll forcing the upper ends of the rods or wires toward each other.
I prefer to make the slots 7 at an inclination corresponding to the inclination of the upper faces of the projections 3.
I do not herein claim a rollpaper holder and cutter having a knife held in position against the roll of paper by means of the weight of the roll itself.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In combination with the standards having projections 3 .and 6, a roll of paper resting on the projections 3, a knife fitting in slots of the projections (5, and wires 13, connecting the roll and knife, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the standards having slots 10, projections 3 and 6, the roll of paper bearing on the projections 3, a knife fitting in the slots of the projections (3, wires or rods 13, connecting the knife and paperroll, and pins fitting in the slots 10 and con nccting thelower ends of the wires or rods to the standards, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the standards, a roll of paper, a knife, and connecting Wires or rods, the wires or rods forcing the knife toward the center of the roll as the size of the roll decreases, said wires or rods being operated by the movement of the roll, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the base, standards 2, having slots 10, projections 3, and slotted projections 6, arms 13, having eyesl4 and 15, knife 9, and pin 11, the slots and projections 6 being inclined, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES K. PICKLES.

EDW. S. KNIGHT.
