UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
vLEO EHELIOH, OE sr. LOUIs, M'IssoUEI, Assis-NOR *ro TEE AMERICAN ROLL PAPER COMPANY, OE sAME P LAOE.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AN Dv CUTTER.y
, sPEoIEIcATIoN forming pm of Letters Patent No. 423,745, dated March 18,1890.
l Application led February 13, 1888. Serial Nol 263,796. (No model.)
`To all whom it may concern.:
Beit known thatI, LEO EHELIGH, of the city of St. Louis,in.the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Cutters, of which vthe following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitail top view.
My invention relates. to certain improvements in a roll-paper holderand cutter for holding and cutting wrapping-paper; and-it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring` to the drawings, I `represents a base to which are secured standards 2. T
3 represents a roller having gudgeons or journals 4, bearing on tramways 5 of the standards 2, and 6 represents the paper on the roller.
7 represents a knife secured to the outerv ends of the tramways 5, and it is preferably provided with a toothed cuttingedge, as shown in Fig. I, though it` may have a plain cutting-edge, if desired.
8 represents asmall guide-roller journaled in the tramways 5, and against which the paper bears, and is held by a Aspring y9. -My preferred means'of constructing this spring is to wind its respective ends around a pin or shaft 10, as shown at l1,- and extend the central portion upward beneat-hthe roller. To assist the spring in moving the roller, the tramways 5 may be inclined, as shown in Fig. II, so that the rollerwill be supported on an inclinedl bearing and have a tendency to move toward the roller 8.
12 represent-s a second guide-roller located near the guide-roller 8 and parallel thereto, and between these rollers the paper passes, as shown in Figs. II and III. The gudgeons of the roller 12 preferably iit in inclined grooves 13 in the tramways 5, so that it can be removed, if desired, in first placing the Fig. II is anv and cutoff. The portion 20 of the paper between the rollersand the knife will then springv up into the position shown in Fig.- II and afford an easy finger-hold when more paper is needed.
la represents bars to hold the4 roller upon l.
The paper is passed from above beneath the roller Sand up between this roller andthe roller 12. I 1
I do not herein claim thejcombinati'on of the 4spindle carrying the paper roll and mounted in slotted bearings with a ,holding-roller arranged to be normally in contact with the and spring-bars or levers.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a suitable frame, a cutting-knife, tramways which support and guide the roll of paper toward said-knife, and a roller which prevents cont-actof the body of; said roll of paper with said knife, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the standards having tramways forming supports for the paperroller, guide-rollers ljournaled in the tramways, against one of which guide-rollers the paper-roller bears,"and between which guiderollers the paper passes, and a knife, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the standards having tramways forming supports for the paperroller, Aguiderollers journaled in the tramways and between `which the paper passes, and a fixed knife secured to the tramways a front of the periphery of the paper roll, knife, T
distance from the guide-rollers, substantially Y as and for the purpose set forth.
securedto the baseand having tramways,
paper-roller bearing and moving upon the tramways of the standards, spring for mov- `ing the paper-roller, two guide-rollers jourvnaled inthe tramways, one of which guiderollers is held in curved slots,`and a knife secured to the tramways, substantially 'as and for the purpose set forth.
` LEO EHRLICH.
In presence of- EDwD. S. KNIGHT,
Y Jos. WAHLE.
