UNITED STATas PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS REIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN ROLL PAPER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ROLL-PAAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,813, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed November 18, 1889. Serial No. 330,690. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS REIN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roll-Paper Holders and Outters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for holding and cutting wrapping-paper; and myinvention consists in features of novelty, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a side elevation of my improved paper holder and cutter. Fig. II is an end view. Fig. III is a detail elevation representing a slight modiiicalion.
Referring to the drawings, l represents a suitable base, upon which are mounted standards 2, supporting a roll 3 of paper. The roll has journals 4, resting in sockets 5 in the upper ends of the standards, as shown on theright-hand side of Fig. I. The standards are provided with inclined faces 6, which, as shown in Figs. I and II, are formed on ribs 7, made fast to or formed integral with the standards. As shown in Fig. III, the inclined faces 6 are formed by inclinin g the standards.
8 represents a knife resting on the rollof paper, and through the outer ends of which the downturned ends 9 of a rod or bar lO pass. The downturned ends 9 also, preferably, pass through slots in the outer ends of horns Il, formed on the standards 2.
l2 represents rollers (preferably flanged or grooved, as shown in Fig, II) journaled to the downturned ends 9, and which bear against The vdownturned ends 9 are formed so as to have a natural tendency to spring inward, and are held M from thus springing inward by the inclined faces (i, against which the rollers 12 bear.
The operation is as follows: Before attempting to insert the roll of paper the knife 8, rod 10, and arms 9 are pulled upward unt-il the rollers l2 rest upon the upper faces of the ribs 7, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. I. The roll can then be conveniently inserted, and by au outward pressure on the ends 9 they are removed from over the ribs 7, and a slight downward movement ofV them brings the rollers l2 against the inclined faces of the ribs. The knife is now resting on the roll of paper, andas the paper. is wanted it is unrolled and cut off. As the size of the roll decreases the pressure of the arms against the inclined faces 6 causes the bar 10, and
` consequently the knife 8, to move in a downward direction, and thus the knife is automatically fed or moved toward the center of the roll as the size of the roll decreases.
I claim as my inventionl. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the
combination of suitable standards supporting the roll of paper, a knife, and spring ends 9, bearing against inclined faces on the standards, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of standards having inclined bearing-faces and supporting the roll of paper, horns on the upper ends of the standards, spring ends guided by the horns and bearing against the inclined faces of the standards, and a knife connected to the ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of suitable standards having ribs with inclined faces, a knife, and spring ends 9, substantially as and for the purpose set' forth.
4.. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, the combination of the standards having ribs '7, with horizontal upper ends and inclined faces 6, a knife, and spring ends 9, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5, In a roll-paper holder and cutter, .the combination of suitable standards, ribs on the standards having inclined bearing-faces, guide-horns on the standards, a knife, and spring ends 9, bearing against the inclined faces of the ribs, substantially as and for the purpose vset forth.
6. In a rollpaper holder and cutter, the combination of the standards having inclined bearing-faces and supporting a roll of paper, a knife, end pieces 9, projecting downwardly from the knife, and rollers on the end pieces bearing against the inclined faces of the 10o standards, substantially ns and for the puron the ends bearing against the inclined faces pose Set forth. of the standards, substantially as and for the 7. In a roll-paper holder and Cutter, the purpose set forth. Combination of the standards supporting a GUSTAVUS REIN. 5 roll of paper and having inclined bearng- In presence of* faces@ knife,a rod 10,1mssing over the knife E. S. KNIGHT, and having downturned ends 9, and rollers THOS. KNIGHT.
