The invention is a devicefor dispensing and cutting toilet paper from rolls and is so arranged that the operating mechanism will feed a short end of the paper'out of the cabinet after the paper is cut.
The object of the invention is to provide a cabinet for holding and dispensing toilet paper in rolls which will also cut the paper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cabinet for holding and feeding toilet paper in rolls which will feed a short end of paper out of the cabinet after the paper is cut so that it vmay be withdrawn by hand as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cabinet for holding and dispensing rolls of toilet paper in which` the same lever that feeds the paper out of the cabinet operates a cutter for cutting the paper.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a cabinet for holding and dispensing toilet paper from rolls which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies a cabinet adapted to hold a roll of toilet paper having feed rollers and a cutter at the lower side operated by a lever and arranged so that the rollers will continue tofeed paper from the device after the paper is cut.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing a front elevation of the cabinet.
Figure 2 is a cross section through the cabinet showing the arrangement of the feed rollers and cutter.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan showing the fe'ed rollers and cutter at the lower end of the cabinet.
Figure 4 is a detail showing the operating gears for the feed rollers.
In the drawing the device is shown as it would be made wherein numeral l indicates the casing, numeral 2 a roll of paper mounted therein and numeral 3 a knife for cutting the paper.
The casing, 1, may be of any suitable shape or design and arranged in any desired manner. In the design shown it is made with a cap 4 that is hinged at the point 5 so that it may readily be raised to insert a new roll of paper. At the sides of the casing are clips 6 which form bearings that support the roll through a core 7 which may readily be inserted through the roll as the roll is placed in the casing. At the back of the casing is a at portion 8 having holes 9 therein so that it' may readily be attached to a wall or other surfaces. The lower end of the casing is shaped as shown in Figure 2r and feed rollers 10 and l1 are rotatably mounted therein upon shafts 12 and 13. The shafts may be mounted direct- 60 ly in the sides of the casing as shown in Figure 3 or in bearings, or in any other manner as may be desired. The gear segmentv 14 is pivotally mounted in the casing at the sides and positioned to engage a gear 15 on the shaft 12 of 65 the roller 10 and also a gear 16 on a shaft 17, and on the shaft 17 is a. gear 18 that meshes with a gear 19 on the shaft l2. The gear 15 is provided with a spring pin 20 and the inner surface of the gear hub is provided with beveled notches 21 which will'permit the vgear to rotate in a counter-clockwise direction without rotating the shaft 12, but will cause the shaft to rotate as it is rotated in the opposite direction by the segment 14. The inner surface of the gear 75. 16 is provided with beveled notches 22 that cooperate with a spring pin 23 in the shaft 17 which will permit this gear to rotate freely in a clockwise direction as the segment moves downward, and cause the shaft to rotate to operate the roller through the gears 18 and 19 as the segment moves back in the opposite direction. The segment is held upward by a spring 24, and may be operated by a knob 25 on a lever 26 on the outside of the casing which extends through the bearing upon which the segment is mounted.
The segment is also provided with a projection 27 that engages a lever 28, pivotally mounted on a pin 29, and the lower end 30 of the lever engages the knife 3 in a socket 31,Y below the rollers 90 10 and l1 and as the segment moves downward the lower end 30 of the lever 28 will move the knife across an opening 32, through which the paper passes, as shown in Figure 3, and thereby shear the paper against a plate 33. The knife is pivotally mounted on a pin 34 and at the center is a notch 35 which will leave a small tit at the center of the paper so that the cut piece will hang thereby. It will be appreciated that the knife may be provided with as many notches as may be desired, or these notches may be arranged at the edges, and also that they may be omitted so that the paper may be cut completely if desired. A spring 36 may be provided at the back of the knife to return the knife and lever 28 to the posi- 105 tion shown, and a spring 37 may be provided in the casing to engage the roll of paper to frictionally hold the roll and keep the paper in tension.
It will be understood that changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the use of a casing of another design, another may be in the use of other means for feeding the paper from the casing, another may be in the use of another means for operating the feed rollers and still another may be in the use of other means for cutting the paper.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. In use the cabinet may be provided as shown and as a roll of paper is inserted the free end may be fed between the feed rollers as shown in Figure 2 and when it is desired to take a piece of paper from the cabinet the knob 25 is pressed downward so that the paper will be fed downward and as it is cut the knob will be released and the spring 24 will return the knob to the upper position. With the return movement of the knob and segment the rollers will be operated through the gear 16 so that they will feed an additional piece of paper, approximately two inches long from the lower end of the cabinet so that there will be a short piece of paper showing below the cabinet at all times.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a toilet paper cutter and holder of the character described, a casing, clips in the casing adapted to freely hold a roll of toilet paper, feedrollers in the lower part of said casing, a knife in the casing below the said feed rollers, a gear segment pivotally mounted in the casing, a gear on one of said rollers adapted to be operated by the said segment, means for operating the said segment, means for operating the knife to cut the paper as the segment is operated, and resilient means for returning the segment to the normal position, said segment and gears adapted to operate the said rollers to feed the paper out of the casing as the segment is moved downward, and also to continue to feed the paper out of the casing as the segment moves upward.
2. In a roll paper cabinet of the character described, a casing means for holding av roll of 'paper in -the casing, feed rollers for feeding the paper from the casing, means for operating the said feed rollers to feed the paper from the casing, and means automaticallyfeeding a small amount cf the paper from the casing as the feed roller operating means returns to its normal lposition.
3. In a roll paper cabinet, a casing, means for holding a roll of paper in the casing, means for feeding the paper from the casing, means for mechanically operating said feeding means, and means for continuing to operate said feeding means as said mechanical operating means returns to its normal position.
4. In a roll paper cabinet, a casing, means for holding a roll of paper in the casing, means for feeding the paper from the casing, a lever for operating said feeding means as it is pressed downward, and means whereby said lever will continue to operate said feeding means as it moves upward.
5. In a roll paper cabinet, a casing, feed rollers in the said casing, a gear segment operating said feed rollers through gears as it is moved in one direction, and means whereby said gear segment will continue to operate the feeding means as it moves in the opposite direction.
6. In a device for feeding rolls of paper, a. cabinet, feed rollers in the cabinet, a gear segment in the cabinet, a gear on one of said feed rollers cooperating with said gear segment to feed paper from the cabinet as the segment is moved in one direction, 'and means also operable by said segment for continuing to operate the feed rollers to feed additional paper as the segment operates through the return movement.
7. In a, device for feeding rolls of paper, a cabinet, feed rollers in the cabinet, a gear segment in the cabinet, a gear on one of said feed rollers cooperating with said gear segment to feed material from the cabinet as the segment is moved in one direction, means for partially cutting the paper also operated by said segment and means also operated by said segment for feeding additional paper out of said cabinet as the segment moves in the opposite direction.
