" TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1917.
Application filed October 24,1916. Serial No. 127,484.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DULLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toilet-Paper a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to toilet paper holders and particularlv to such as may be built into the wall of a room.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned, which shall be of perfectly sanitary construction, and which shall present a neat and ornamental appearance.
A further object of said invention is to provide a device of said character which may be used for paper towels and which, being built into the wall of a room, shall be out of the way, and thus adapt itself more completely to the other furnishings of the room and the wall decorations.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my inven tion. a part thereof being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation, a portion of the front being mutilated to show the interior.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of a fragment showing the slide way for the front of the device.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective of the cutting knife.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective of the paper or towel guide.
The numeral 1 indicates a box which may be made of any suitable material and of any desired or appropriate shape and dimen sions. I prefer, however, to make said box of metal. The said box is built into the wall 2, the front flange 3 of said box being flush with the wall. The vertical side flanges 4 of the box are bent over so as to provide slide-ways 5 into which a glass panel or door 6 is arranged to fit. The said panel is provided wit a button 7 so that it may be readily inserted or removed from the slideway. On opposite sides of the inside of the box are brackets 8 provided with notches 9, the said notches serving as bearings for the axle 10 of the roller 11, the said roller being arranged to receive a roll of paper or towels in the usual manner. Secured to the brackets 8 are springs 12 constructed to impinge against the ends of the roller, and act as a brake thereon so that the operation of said roller may be steady and uniform. Near the bottom of the slide-ways 5 are shoulders 13 which provide rests for the trunnions 14; of the cutting knife 15. The said knife is provided with a cutting edge 16, which edge projects outwardly at an angle from the front of the box when mounted and is ar ranged to rest upon a guide 17 which is secured to the under side of the box. The cut ting knife 15 is provided with an operating button 18 so that the cutting knife may be raised from the guide plate. Secured to the lower flange of the box are leaf springs 19 which bear upon the ends 20 of the knife, the said ends being arranged to rest in a vertical plane when the knife 15 is in the guide plate 17, and the lower portion of front flanges 4 being cut away to expose the said ends 20 as shown in Fig. 2; the springs 19 thus hold the knife normally depressed against the guide plate. Centrally located in the guide plate 17 is a finger notch 21 whereby the user is enabled to take hold of the end of the paper or towel to be Withdrawn from the holder.
The use and operation of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the foregoing description thereof.
When the roller 11 is provided with towels or paper, the front panel 6 having been removed for the insertion of same, the free end of said towel or paper is inserted between the knife 15 and the guide plate 17. In order to withdraw the same, the knife 15 is raised by pressing backward the button 18, and the fingers of the user may' thus take hold of the free end of the paper at the notch 21 and withdraw same. The knife is then permitted to assume its normal position and the towel or paper out oif in the usual manner by means of the cutting edge 16.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character specified, comprising a box, means in said box for rotatably supporting a roller. front flanges on said box. said flanges being provided with slide-ways for a. transparent panel, a transparent panel adapted to slide into said slideways. a guide plate at the bottom of said box and projecting outwardly and downwardly therefrom, acutting knife adapted to rest upon said guide plate, means whereby said cutting knife may be raised from said guide plate and means normally to hold said knife in contact with said guide plate, substantially as and for the yurpose described:
2. A device of the character specified,
comprising a box adapted to fit into a wall means in said box for rotatably supporting a roller, flanges around the outer edges of said box adapted to lie flush with said wall, the side flanges being provided with slideways for a transparent panel, a transparent panel adapted to slide into said slide-Ways, a guide plate at the bottom of said box and projecting outwardly and downwardly therefrom, a cutting knife adapted to rest upon said guide plate, means whereby said cutting knife may be raised from said guide plate and means normally to hold said knife in contact wit-h said guide plate, substan- 20 tially as and for the purpose described FRANK DULLE,
