This invention relates to an improved device for holding and dispensing paper in roll form.
Such devices, in the form of permanent fixtures, are useful for dispensing wax paper, wrapping paper, or paper towels in roll form.

Another object of the invention is to provide sorted with little effort.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which is sanitary, s1
'mple of construction, inexpensive to manufacture and of attractive appearance.

Referring to the drawings, I designates a substantially rectangular case or container made of sheet metal or other suitable material and consisting of a back 2, side panels 3, and a bottom 4. A cover for the case consists of a top 6, a front portion 1, and flanges 8 to overlap the side panels. The cover is pivotally attached to the case by a rod 9 passing through the lower front corners of the side panels and the flanges of the cover. The side panels 3 are provided with projections 10 formed by punching material of the side panels inwardly and arranged semicircularly to act as a bearing for a spindle H or other supporting means for a roll of paper it. Projecting the core i3 beyond the ends of the roll may be a possible method of eliminating a spindle. If desired the projections it] may be omitted and the roll of paper allowed to rest on the bottom of the container. To fasten the cover securely to the case, both are provided with embossments M and I5 situated to engage when the container is closed. The back 2 of the case has openings It for the admission of fastening means for attachment to 'a suitable support.
The front end of the bottom has an upturned portion ll and a forwardly turned portion i8. Coacting with the part is is the upper edge IQ of a lever it which is pivotally attached to the rod 9. As shown in the drawings of the preferred embodiment of the invention the lever consists of a thin strip of material having the upper edge l9 bent parallel to the part i8 and provided with alternating indentations 2i with side openings capable of admitting the rod 9. The edge 59 may be serrated if desired. The bottom of the front of the cover is sharpened to provide a cutting edge 22. Other means for providing a cutting edge on or apart from the cover may be employed, and, if desired, the edge may be serrated or otherwise modified.
Fig. 6 depicts an embodiment of the invention which may be inserted in a recess in a wall. In this instance it is possible to eliminate the back and upper halves of'the side panels 3' of the case and the top section of the cover 5. The case may be secured in the recess by adhesive material or other means of attachment.
Figs. 7 to 10 present a form of the invention wherein several rolls of paper may be inserted in the container, the arrangement of parts being such that any desired web may be cut inde- 5o pendently of the others on the common cutting edge. In the present instance, the device shown is capable of holding three rolls of paper. The container consists of sides 3", a back 2", a bottom 4" and av cover 5" provided with flanges 8".
As will be seen from the drawings. the device is similar to that of Figs. 1 to 5 with the exception that suitable provision is made to take care of the two additional webs 24 and 2|: two additional transverse slots 26 and 2'! are cut in the bottom. and levers 2. and 20 are attached to rods 30 and II located in the respective slots and passing through the side panels. The levers 20, 28 and 28 may be of equal vertical lengths or may be graduated so that the hindmost. that is 28, is the longest.
In use the container is opened by pulling the cover forward about its pivot as far as it will go and exposing the inside of the case completely to permit the insertion of a roll of paper on a spindle with the ends of the spindle journailed in the bearings. The spindle should fit snugly in the roll and in the bearings in order that a slight degree of friction be present to prevent undue turning of the roll. A similar result may be attained by a spring leaf, or'similar element, pressing on the roll. The arrangement of the cover and case is such that when the cover is in open position the lever III is turned by the cutting edge 22 to increase the space between the edge l8 and the upper edge I9 of the lever, thus facilitating the insertion of the end of a web 23. Insertion of the web is also facilitated by first cutting the end of the web at an oblique angle with the lateral sides of the web and then inserting the pointed side first.
The container can now be closed and sections of paper removed by pulling the end of the web down until a desired length is exposed and then pullingforward to force the edge is toward the edge l8, the lever thus acting as a braking mechanism on the web to hold the paper while it is being brought against the cutting edge 22. This condition is shown in Fig. 5. On severing the paper by an upward movement against the cutting edge, the cut end of the web 23 assumes the position shown in Fig. 3, that is, the end is away from and somewhat below the cutting edge so that it may be readily grasped for the removal of the succeeding portion of paper. The lateral distance of the lever from the cutting edge determines the amount of web which will be exposed.
It is sometimes desirable to be able to determine the extent of exhaustion of a roll of paper without necessitating the opening of the container. This may be accomplished by enlarging one of the openings in the side panels resulting from the formation of the projections I 0. Also, by coloring the edges of the windings of the roll near the core, visible evidence will be produced when the roll nears a state 01' exhaustion.
When using the device 01' Figs. '7 to 10, the webs are arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 7; the web of the bottom roll passing through the hindmost slot and the web of the top roll through the foremost slot. In this embodiment of the invention, an advantage of the v arrangement oi parts of the container and materials to be dispensed is that at all times the ends of the webs are kept apart and at constantly varying levels permitting the desired paper to be readily grasped and drawn across the cutting edge without interference from the other webs. 7
It will be apparent that numerous modifications well within the scope of the invention are possible, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood from the foregoing detailed description.
I claim: 7
