SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,891, dated June 24, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. SHERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northfield, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Strap-Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in clamps for hitching-straps and the like.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device adapted to be readily attached to a strap or portion of a harness and capable of securely clamping another portion of the strap or harness to obviate the necessity of tying the strap and the inconveniences and dangers attendant upon the same.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a clamp constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied in operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached from the strap. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
I Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a clamp, which consists of a baseplate 2, provided at one end with a stationary jaw 3 and at the other end with a loop 4, by means of which the plate is secured to a strap, a sliding jaw 5, having a plate or shank 6 formed integral therewith, and a cam-lever 7, adapted to operate the sliding jaw and lock the same when clamping a strap. The baseplate 2 is constructed of suitable Inetal and is provided intermediate of its ends witha pair of ears S, that are oppositely disposed and formed integral with the plate 2, and have pivoted between them the cam-lever 7, the cam-face 9 of which is arranged to engage the sliding jaw 5 to lock the clamp and to engage a shoulder l0 to carry the sliding jaw out of engagement with the strap., The plate or shank 6 of the sliding jaw 5 is provided with aslot ll, in which is arranged a screw l2, that limits the Inovemet of the sliding jaw, and its threaded end engages athreaded perforation of the plate 2. The cam-lever 7 has its arm 13 provided with a screw 14, which, when the lever engages the sliding jaw, rests upon the head of theV screw l f2 and prevents the arm 13 of the lever coming too close to the shank of the sliding jaw and maintains the cam-face in engagement with the sliding jaw and prevents the said cani being forced outward beyond the sliding jaw. By this construction astrap is .readily clamped and secured in place without necessitating the tying of knots,wvhich is inconvenient. l
The clamp may be attached to the ring which connects the lazy-straps with the crupperstrap and the back-strap, and the end of a bitching-strap can be secured to the clamp, and the necessity of passing the strap through the terrets and tying the same is obviated. The clamp Inay also be attached to a hitch ing-strap, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the clamp is arranged a sufiicient distance from the end of the. strap to permit the latter to be passed around a post and secured by the clamp, which will prevent the strap slipping down the post and pulling upon the bit and annoying the animal, as is the case Where straps are tied to posts having no rings.
From the foregoing description andthe accompanying drawings the construction, 0peration, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood.
lVhat I claim ism l. A clamp forharness, comprising the plate 2, having a loop to receive a strap, and provided with a stationary jaw, the sliding jaw, and the cam-lever arranged to engage and 0perate the sliding jaw, substantially as de scribed.
2. A clamp for harness, comprising the plate 2, having a loop to receive a strap, and provided at one end with a stationary jaw and at the other end with a loop, and having intermediate of its ends a pair of ears 8, the sliding jaw having the plate or shank tl, and the cam-lever pivoted between said ears and arranged to engage and operate the sliding jaw, substantially as described.
3. A clamp for harness, comprising the plate 2, adapted to be secured to a strap and having a stationary jaw 3 at one end, and provided intermediate of its ends with a pair of earsS, the sliding jaw having the shank or IOO plate provided with a shoulder 10 and a siot 11, the screw 12, secured to the plate 2 and engaging the slot ll, and the cam-lever pivoted between the ears 8 and arranged to en- In testimony that I oiaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
