Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EFICE.
ALFRED BRADY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.A
IMPROVEMENT IN BATHlNG-TUBS.
Specification forming pa t of Letters Patent N0. 43,002, dated June 7, 1864.
To all whom it may concern..-
Beit known that I, ALFRED BRADY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Bathing-Tubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specieation.
Ais the tub with the waste-hole() placed near the side or end of the tub, and connecting with the waste-pipe e under the tub. c is the overflow-hole. d is the overflow-channel, placed on theinner side of the tub, and cast as a part of its side or end, and directly over part of the waste-hole b. f is a hele at the top of the overflow-channel, sufficiently large for the inserting a rod, wire, or other substance to remove any obstruction in the overow-channel or waste-pipe.
To enable those skilled in the business of making sinks or basins to make them with my invention and improvement, I proceed to describe its construction and operation. I cast the tub or basin A in any of the known forms, except that I have the side where the overflow-channel d is placed straight. I cast the overflow-channel d on the inside ot the tub and forming part of its side or end. I have the waste-hole b placed close up to the side or end of the tub and extending partly under the end of the overliow-channel. I have asieve or plate, Gr,with holes in it, to place over the waste-hole to allow the water and small particles to pass through, but to prevent large pieces of dirt or other matter from passing into the wastepipe. This plate or sieve G, I fasten over the waste hole, with screws, which, at the same time, pass through and fasten the flange that holds the waste-pipe e to the bottom of the tub and to the waste-hole. The sieve or plate G fits tight around the outside of the overiow-channel, and also to the bottom of the tub over the waste-hole. Thus the overflow-channel, part of the waste-hole, and the waste-pipe form one straight, continuous channel from near the top ofthe tub A to any required distance into the waste-pipe, and at the same time leaving the waste-hole sufficiently large into the tub to drain the tub, thereby diminishing the liability of either the overliow-channel or wastepipe becoming obstructed. I have an opening in the top of the overloW-ehannel sut'- eiently large for a rod or other substance 1o be put in to clear out the channel or wastepipe, in case either should become obstructed. 1t Will be perceived that this arrangement is equally well adapted to basins, sinks, and water-closets. l
What I claim as my invention and improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
Ihe construction, combination, and arrangement of the overliow-cha-nnel, the waste-hole, and waste-pipe, as described in the above specitication, the overHow-channel being placed on the inside of the tub, so as to bring the over flow-channel over part of the waste-hole and waste-pipe, thereby forming one straight and continuous channel from the top of the overflow-channel into the waste-pipe, the opening in the top ofthe overflow-channel being sulliciently large for removing obstructions in the overflow-channel or waste-pipe, al1 as shown and described.
Dated New York, February 22, 1864.
ALFRED BRADY.
