OVERFLOW-TRAP FOR WASH-BASINS BATH-TUBS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,911, dated December 22, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN LANE, Jr., acitizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Overflow-Traps for Wash-Basins, Bath-Tubs, Sinks, 8m, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an overflow attachment for wash-basins, bath-tubs, &c., of novel, simple, and efficient contrivance, that connects with the basin at the bottom of the same by a trap, so that while it maintains the water at the proper level when the wastepipe plug stops the waste-pipe the basin will empty all the same when the plug is withdrawn, but the overflow will be sealed with water remaining in the trap, which prevents the escape of foul odors, so common from the deposits bodyingin the overflow-passage, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which h lgure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a wash-basin having my improved overflowtrap. Fig. 2 is a detail in plan View.
lnstead of attaching the upper end of the waste-pipe a directly to the basin, I form on or attach to said pipe a cup, 12, adapted to be attached to the bottom of the basin 0 in any approved way, so as to make a watertight joint, d, with lead or packing, and through-the center of this cup I make an extension, e, of the waste-pipe up through the bottom of the basin for the escape of the water, and for receiving the plugf, for retaining the water in the basin. 1n the bottom of the basin 0, and surrounding the waste-pipe extension 6, I make a series of holes, 9, communicating with cup 12, and into one side of said cup I connect one end of an overflow-pipe, h, rising as high as it is desired to maintain the water in the basin, and returning by the bend vi to the Waste-pipe a,with which it connects by its other end, below the trap j, for discharging therein.
When the waste-pipe is stopped by the plug f, the pipe h allows free escape of the water into the waste-pipe after the proper level has been reached in the basin, and when the plug is removed the escape of foul odors from the overflow is trapped by the water re maining in the cup I), as will be clearly seen.
The overflowh may connect with the wastepipe above or below the trap j, as preferred, and the vent-pipe sometimes used to conduct the gases from the waste-pipe up through the top of the house may connect either with the waste-pipe a or the overflow h, as preferred.
For asimple method of'connecting the wastepipe or and the cup b to the basin I utilize the extension e for a screw to bind them together, by constructing it with a head, k, at the upper end and fitting thelower portion to screw into the upper end of pipe a, or into a nipple, Z, of the bottom of the cup in case pipe at connects to said cup by a nipple, as I have represented it in this case.
The basin is properly recessed in the bottom for the head It to set in flush with the surface of the basin, and the passages y, connecting the overflow-trap and the basin, are made in the head, which is made sufficiently large for the purpose. The holes also serve for the application of a spanner for turning the screw.

the combined basin having a series of holes through it surrounding the waste-pipe connection, the cup I), attached to the upper end of the waste-pipe a, and adapted to be attached to the bottom of the basin and to receive the water through the holes aforesaid, the overflow-pipe h, attached to the cup and to the waste-pipe, and the headed and screwthreaded extension-joint e of the waste-pipe, passing through and connecting the cup and the basin, and forming a separate waste-passage through the cup, substantially as described.
