CONNECTION FOR FLUSHING DRAIN-PIPES 0F SINKS, WASHBASINS. dc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,770, dated April 2, 1 895.
Application filed January 24, 1895. Serial No. 536,089. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED BOWSKILLVINTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San J os, county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Connections for Flushing the Drain Pipes of Sinks, Washbasins, Bath-Tubs, &c.; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description .of the same.
My invention relates to the general class of plumbing connections, and it consists in the novel, readily adjustable and removable connection, hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed, for forming a temporary tight joint with the drain pipes of sinks, washbasins, or trays, bath tubs, &c., whereby the said drain pipes may be readily cleansed, or opened when clogged, by a flushing or forcing operation, due to a force pump attached to the temporary connection.
Theobject of my invention is to provide a simple and readily adjustable means for connecting a flushing or forcing pump with the drain or waste pipe, whereby the latter may be cleansed or opened out in an easy, thorough and efiective manner, and with the least expenditure of labor.
Referring to the, accompanying drawings for a more comple explanation of my invention,Figure 1 is a section of my drain pipe connection. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the strainer of Fig. 1, showing the engagement therewith of the lugs of the nipple.
Though my connection is applicable to any drain pipe, it is especially applicable, and I have herein shown it in connection with the drain pipe A and strainer B of a bath tub, wash-basin, or other like vessel, the bottom of which is shown at E.
O is a centrally apertu red plate or base having on its under side a washer or gasket D whereby when the plate 0 is laid upon the top of the drain hole over the strainer, the washer or gasket will form a tight joint between said base and the bottom of the vessel E, which represents the bath tub, wash-basin, or other like vessel. This base is secured and firmly held in place by means of a nipple F, the lower end of which passes through the central aperture of the base A, and is formed 011 its extremity with oppositely turned catch lugs f which pass by and engage under the bars of the strainer. The end of thevnipple F is externally threaded and upon it, above the plate A, is seated a tightening nut G. To apply the device, this nut is run up on the thread of the nipple, the plate with its washer is dropped over the strainer, the nipple is passed down through the plate and strainer and by a quarter turn its catch lugs are adapted to engage under the bars of the strainer, and then the nut is run down again tightly against the plate, thus forming a water tight joint.
To the nipple F is connected the hose H of a force pump, unnecessary herein toshow.
When the device is about to be used, the hose is slipped over the nipple and the pump is operated, whereby the drain or waste pipe is properly flushed,to clean it out, or is opened, it it has become clogged.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A connection for flushing the drain or waste pipes of sinks, wash-basins, bath-tubs and the like, consisting of a plate or base adapted to be seated in the vessel over the mouth of the drain or waste pipe, and having a central aperture communicating therewith, a washer on the under side of the plate or base for forming a tight joint, a nipple passing through the central aperture of the plate or base, and having catch lugs on its lower end adapted to engage the cross bars of the strainer, said nipple receiving the hose connection with the hose pump, and a'tightening nut seated on the nipple and adapted to bear down against the plate or base to secure and tighten it in place.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRED BOWSKILL VINTER.
