DRAIN AND WASTE PIPE CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. CROCKER and DE LANCE WALLACE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, and of Walla Walla, in the county of NValla Walla and State of \Vashington, respectively, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Drain and Waste Pipe Cleaners, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in drain and waste pipe cleaners, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a means whereby waste and drain pipes leading from sinks, wash basins, bath tubs, and so forth, may be readily cleaned by the removal of obstructions therein, in a short time and Without any special amount of exertion and without the requirement of special tools and of skilled labor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described affording means whereby a direct water passage from a-faucet or other supply of water under pressure, may be established to the waste pipe or drain pipe, whereby water may be forcibly flushed through the latter so as to carry away any obstruction.
Still another object of the invention is to provide such a device as we have set forth including a crown or dome which may be readily connected to a pipe or faucet, or other source of water under pressure, means being provided whereby the crown or dome may be connected to the sink, wash basin, etc., in such manner that water-tight joints will be formed, so that the full pressure and force of the water may be directed through the waste or drain pipe leading from the fixture.
A further object is to provide a device of the class described which will be extremely simple, durable, efiicient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which- Figure 1 represents a view 'in section vided,
taken through a sink equipped with the cleaning device ready for operation; Fig. 2 represents a view in perspective of the attaching element or clip used when the crown or dome is to be connected with the strainer of a sink and the like; Fig. 3 represents a view in section showing the device as attached to a wash basin; and Fig. 4 represents a view in perspective of the clamp used in connecting the device with the strainer of a wash basin or tub.
In carrying out our invention we provide a crown or dome 5 which is hollow and which is-substantially hemispherical in configuration, said dome being provided with an outwardly extending annular flange 6 at its margin. This flange at its outer edge is bent downwardly all the way around as at 7. At its apex the dome may be thickened as at 8, or in lieu thereof, a suitable washer may he used. This apex is provided with an opening through which a threaded bolt 9 is adapted to extend.
On one side of the dome or crown a nipple 10 is provided, whereby the crown may be connected through the medium of a section 11 of flexible hose, with a pipe or faucet or other source of water under pressure indicated at 12.
Carried on the bolt 9 within the crown or dome is a squared nut 13. A metallic washer 14 and a compressible washer 15 are carried by the bolt without the dome, and this bolt is provided with a winged head 16 whereby it may readily be turned by hand. The nut 13 is adapted to be engaged by a suitable clip whereby the dome or crown may be securely engaged to the floor of the sink. In order that a water tight joint may be made between said dome and fixture floor, a compressible washer 17 is prowhich is annular in formation and. which rests against the flange 6 within the downturned edge 7 thereof. This Washer is adapted to be compressed between said flange and the floor of the fixture, when the device is secured in place.
In Fig. '1 we have shown the device as being attached to a sink indicated at 18, in whose floor the usual concave perforated strainer 19 is provided, for protecting the waste or drain pipe indicated at 20.
The clip or engaging element whereby the dome is connected with the floor of the sink is indicated in perspective in Fig.2. It
' posed hook portions comprises a strip of metal of a substantially inverted U-shape, including side bars 21 connected at their upper ends to-the. Web portion 22. The latter is provided with an opening 23 through which the bolt 9 may extend into engagement with the nut 13, on either side of which the side bars or legs 21 of the clip engage in the manner indicated. The lower ends of bars orlegs 21 are bent outwardly in opposite directions as at 24, and terminate in oppositely dis- The hooks 25 are adapted to be engaged in perforations in the strainer 19 in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. In order that the legs or side bars 21 of the clip may be maintained in such position as to prevent accidental disengagement of the hooks 25 with the sink strainer, we provide a band or ring 26 which may be slipped down upon the legs in order to prevent them from receding from each other.
In Fig. 3 the device is shown as connected to a wash basin indicated at 27, in whose floor the usual. strainer 28 provided with the cross bars 29 is positioned. The clip used in this instance consists of a strip of metal 21 bent over at its upper end to provide a hooked portion 22 having an opening 23 for the reception of screw 9, said hooked portion being adapted to engage the nut 13 for preventing relative movement of the strip 21 and the nut. The lower end of strip 21 is bifurcated as at 30,'and is bent outwardly and upwardly to provide the spaced hooks 25 for engagement with the cross bars 29 of the strainer in the manner indicated.
When the parts have been assembled in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the bolt 9 may be tightened up so that a strain is put upon the washers 17 and 15 in order that a water tight joint may be provided beon, and will rush downwardly through the hose section 11, through the dome or, crown, 7
embodiment of our invention, we may de-' sire to make such changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts thereof as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope-of the appended claims. a
We claim 1. A device of the class described including a dome provided with a marginal flange adapted to receive a compressible washer, said dome being further provided with a nipple adapted to be connected with .a supply of water under pressure, a bolt carried by the dome and movable relatively thereto, a nut carried by the bolt within'the dome, means for preventing leakage around the bolt, and a clip provided with means for engaging the nut and with means for engaging the straining device of a fixture whereby the dome may be tightened against the floor of said fixture, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a dome adapted to be connected with a supply of water under pressureand adapted to be secured upon the floor of a fixture adjacent the waste pipe of the fixture, a nut. a clip adapted to engage the straining device of the fixture, and being provided with means for engaging the nut, and means carried by the dome and adapted to engage the not for drawing the dome and clip toward and away from each other for respectively securing the dome in place and allowing removal of the same.
