UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
THOMAS MADDOOK, OFYTRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND WASH-BOWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,998, dated August 24, 1875; application filed August 4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MADDOOK, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Wash-Bowls; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my bowl. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
It frequently happens that the ordinary wasteway on the side of a wash-basin is insufficient to carry off the water as fast as it flows from the -spigot. In such case the water rises and flows over the edge of the basin. It also frequently happens that water upon the top of the stand will flow over, and, by capillary attraction or some other cause, will flow back through the joint between the top edge 'of the basin and the lower surface of the' slab A.
My invention is designed to obviate the effeet of either of these causes by making a groove around on the upper surface of basin rim or flange, and venting said groove into the waste-pipe or overflow, and thereby arrest and carry away any water which may flow through said joint from any cause whatever.
That others may fully understand my invention, I will particularly describe it.
A is a hand wash-basin of earthenware, with an overflow or waste pipe, B, as usual. I also make a groove, a, along the upper side of the rim 1), running around said rim, and provide said groove with one or more vent-holes, c, from said groove into the waste-pipe B, whereby any drip-water, or any excess in the bowl A, will be carried to the waste-pipe, instead of
