JOHN C. IIUNQERBUEHLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA; AMALIE I-IUNGERBUHLER EXEOUTRIX OF SAID JOHN C. I-IUNGERBUEHLER,
DECEASED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 6 8, dated- July 4, 1899- Application filed August 18,1898. Serial No. 688,858. (No model.)
.Be it known that I, JOHN C. HUNGERBUEH! LER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers for aste-Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,of which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing my invention as in use in connection with a water-faucet of well-known type. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view; Fig. 3, a section on line 0c 00, Fig. 2. Fig. +Lis an elevation of the splash guard removed. 7
My invention relates to improvements in cesspools or drains for use in connection with hydrants and the like; and my object has been to provide such a device which shall be simple and more efficient than any other with which I am familiar, my especial object being to prevent the splashing of the water which occurs in the well-known forms of cesspools now in use when the Water is allowed to flow from the faucet of the hydrant under the considerable pressure incident to the common water-supply systems.
My invention consists, broadly, in providing a drain-plate provided with a depending splash-guard, which latter is adapted to be placed in line with the faucet of a hydrant or the like.
The invention consists, further, in certain improved features and details of construction hereinafter pointed out and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 is a faucet of a source of water-supply such, for instance, as a hydrant.
2 is a funnel-shaped hopper or support, preferably of cast or sheet metal, whose lower end communicates with a drain-pipe 3, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3. Secured to the top of this support 2 is drain-plate 5, which is dished, as seen, and perforated by numerous holes '7, as seen. The drain-plate 5 is in this instance secured to a flange 4: of the support 2 by bolts 6.
The drain-plate 5 is-provided with a large central aperture 8, in this instance circular in form, which is surrounded by a depressed flange 8, on which flange rests the peripheral nearits top, below the drain-plate 5, it is perforatedby a series of holes 10. The bottom of the splash-guard is also preferably provided with perforations 11.
The device is used in the following manner: Premising that the cesspool is so placed that the splash-guard 9 will be in line with the 1 faucet 1, the latter is opened and the water escaping therefrom falls with considerable force into the said guard, but is prevented from splashing about by the side of the guard. The bottom of the splash-guard 9 being of concave form, as hereinbefore referred to, greatly aids in this result by causing the water on striking it to curl over and settle quietly, although the pressure be considerable. When the splashguard has become filled with water to the height of the holes 10, it flows therefrom into the drain-pipe 3. Should, however, the flow of water from the faucet be so great that the holes 10 are unable to carry it off and the splash-guard overflow, the perforations 7 in the drain-plate will allow such overflow to pass down into the drain-pipe.
- The object of the perforations 11 in the bottom of the splash-guard 9 is to allow the guard to drain when the supply of water from the faucet is stopped, so that no water will be allowed to remain in the guard when not in use. These perforations may, however, though at a disadvantage, be omitted.
The splash-guard 9 is preferably not secured to the plate 5, the flange 9 thereof merely resting upon and being supported by maybe made by one skilled in the art to which my invention pertains Withoutdeparting from the essence of the invention.
Having now particularly described the construction and method of use of my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a cesspool for hydrants and the like, the combination of the drain-pipe, the foraminated, dished drain-plate supported above said pipe, and provided with a central aperture, the depressed flange surrounding said aperture, the removable, tapered splash-guard provided with the flange, 9, supported upon the first-mentioned flange, said splash-guard being provided with the perforations, 11, in the bottom thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cesspool for hydrants and the like, the combination with the drain-pipe of a funnel-shaped hopper communicating therewith, the foraminated, dished drain-plate secured to the top of said hopper and provided with the central aperture, together with the thimble-shaped splash-guard fitted to and depending through said aperture and having the concave bottom, substantially as set forth.
3. In a cesspool for hydrants and the like, the combination with the drain-pipe of the hopper, 2, communicating therewith, the dished, foraminated drain-plate secured to the top of said hopper and provided with the central aperture, the depressed flange surrounding said aperture, the thimble-shaped splashguard provided with the peripheral flange supported upon the first-mentioned flange, said splash-guard being provided with the holes, 10, adjacent to the top thereof, and the perforations, 11, in the bottom, together with the bail pivoted inside said splashguard, all constructed arranged and adapted substantially as set forth.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 30th day of July, A. D. 1898.
JOHN C. HUNGERBUEHLER.
