OUTLET CONNECTION AND STRAINER FOR SINKS.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CLIFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Outlet Connections and Strainers for Sinks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of outlet connections and strainers for sheet metal sinks.
Heretofore the perforated strainer plates which usually fit substantially flush with the bottom of the sink, have generally been socured in place by a central screw, the outlet connection of the sink being provided with a bridge to afford a bearing for this screw. In this old construction where the bridge extends across the discharge outlet difficulty is experienced by reason of material lodging on the bridge and the outlet becoming clogged; and also because, in cleaning out the discharge pipe in the usual way by means of a force pump, the bridge oifers an obstruction for connecting the mouth or nozzle of the pump pipe, thus rendering it necessary to disconnect the outlet connection entirely before the pump pipe can be connected; and even then a great difficulty is experienced because after the outlet connection is removed the disconnected end of the discharge pipe has no support and is, therefore, liable to injury in the operation of cleaning the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient construction of the out let connection and strainer whereby these objections or difficulties may be avoided.
To this end my invention consists in combining the outlet connection and strainer plate together by means of screws entering the flanged rim of the outlet connection, thus dispensing entirely with all bridges or proj ections extending across the discharge opening and leaving such opening free and clear. By this means I am enabled, by simply removing the peripheral screws which secure the strainer plate in place, to remove the strainer alone and thereby give access to the unobstructed discharge opening, so that the pipe or nozzle of the force pump may be inserted or connected directly therewith, and at the same time preventing any danger of the discharge opening becoming clogged by reason of material lodging upon bridges or screw supports in the discharge opening.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a sink provided with my invention. .Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the strainer plate. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is abottom view of the strainer plate, and Fig. 5 is a partial section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings A represents a sink, the same being stamped up out of sheet steel, and furnished with a circular depression, seat or ledge a to receive the strainer plate B, and a secondary depression, seat, or ledge a to receive the annular flanged rim d of the outlet connection D.
C is the discharge pipe connection.
The outlet connection D is secured to the seat a of the sink by a threaded nut D, and interposed packing ring d. The discharge pipe connection C has an exterior annular flange or lip c, and is secured to the outlet connection D by a flanged nut C and an interposed packing rim, 6'. The flange or rim d of the outlet connection D is provided with threaded holes 01 preferably two in number, in which fit the screws b b by which the strainer B is secured in place on the seat aof the sink.
The strainer plate or disk B is provided with projecting bosses b on its under face which fit against the upper surface of the rim (1 of the outlet connection, and thus serve to raise the strainer plate slightly above the surface of the rim d to leave a space 29 for the passage of water. By reason of this space or passage 19 the outer series of holes or perforations b in the strainer plate are made effective, and the capacity of the strainer is thus materially increased, which is a matter of great advantage and convenience. The bosses or projections b on the under side of the strainer plate are, preferably, located at and surrounding the holes in which the screws I claim-- 1. The combination with a stamped sheet steel sink A furnished with an outlet opening at its bottom, and two integral seats a a surrounding said outlet opening, of an outlet connection D formed in a separate piece from the sink and having a flange 0r rim d fitting said seat a and furnished with threaded holes, strainer B fitting said seat a, screws 19 entering the threaded holes in said rim d for securing said strainer in place, and a clamp nut D surrounding said outlet opening and clamping the flange d of the outlet to the seat a of the sink, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of sink A furnished with an integral seat a, of a separate outlet connection D having a flange or rim d fitting said seat a and furnished with threaded holes, a strainer plate secured to said flange d by screws entering said threaded holes, said outlet connection D having external screw threads, and a clamp nut D surrounding said outlet connection, substantially as specified. 3. The combination of the stamped steel sink A, furnished with strainer seat a and seat a for the flange or rim of the outlet connection, with the outlet connection D having flange or rim d furnished with threaded holes d strainer B and screws b entering the holes in said rim d, the under face of said strainer plate being provided with bosses or projections 1) to leave a water passage 19 between said strainer plate and said rim of the outlet connection, substantially as specified.
