SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,630, dated J' une 10, 1890. Application filed May 9, 1889. Seria'lNo. 310,144. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. KENYON, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Bolts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
The obj ect of my invention is to provide a bolt of simple and cheap construction that is easily thrown and is locked against return movement.
To this end my invention consists in the combination of a bolt-plate having the boltsupports, the bolt, and the bolt-moving device, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an edge view of a bolt embodying my invention, with parts cut away to illustrate the construction. Fig. 2 is a view of the back side of the plate. Fig. 3 is a detail edge view of a modiiied form of my invention. Fig. 4- is a detail back view of this latter form.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes a boltplate; a', the upturned end forming the face-plate of the bolt; b, a bolt formed of a single piece of metal, with one end supported in an opening a through the face-plate and the other end supported by the handle c. A curved slot d is formed in the plate near its inner end and at a suitable distance from the face-plate a', and through this curved slot the pin e extends, that is secured to the bolt h and also to the bolt-handle c. In the form shown in Figs. l and 2 the pin e is secured in the base of a rotary knob that turns on a lpin c', by means of which the knob and bolt-handle are secured to the bolt-plate.- By rotating this knob the pin e is caused to move along the slot from end to end thereof. This slot is so arranged with reference to the length of the bolt that when the pin crests in the end of the slot farthest from the face-plate a the bolt is at the inner end of its throw, and when the pin is located in the 'opposite end of the slot the bolt is at the outer limit of its throw.
The ends d of the slot d are located a short distance below a line passing through the center of the pin c and the center of the curve on which the slot d is struck, so that when the bolt is at either end or limit of its throw it is locked against any movement either inward or outward, except that force to move it is applied to the handle of the bolt in such manner as to cause the pin to travel along the slot.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the pin e is connected directly to the knob c-that is, the outer end of the pin is enlarged to form a handle-and the movement of the bolt is effected by sliding the pin along the slot in the same manner as in the other form, so far as the movement of the pin itself is concerned.
A bolt made in accordance with my withindescribed improvement is few in the number of its parts and simple in construction, while being effectually held or locked against accidental movement without the use of any special springs or clamping devices.
The ends d of the vcurved slot, in which the pin lies when the bolt is at either end of its throw, are termed the terminal lockingsockets in the following claims.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the bolt-plate a., provided with the curved slot cl and formed with the face-plate a ,having a bolt-hole a, the handle c, pivoted to the bolt-plate concentric with the curved slot, and having fixed therein the eccentrically-arranged pin e, projecting through the curved slot and pivotally secured to the rear end of the bolt, all substantially as described.
2. In combination with a bolt-plate having at one end a back-turned face-place with a bolt-opening therethrough, a curved slot formed in the bolt-plate and having terminal locking-sockets, substantially as described, a
sliding bolt b, supported at one end in the y opening a in the face-plate, and also by a pin e near the other end of thebolt, the said pin extending through and movable in the curved slot in the bolt-plate and having a handle on the front of the bolt-plate, all substantially as described.
