Description

(No Model.) I
. J. 0. GORBS. I
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR PENOILS.
No; 428,752. Patented May 2'7, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. GORES, OF EAU CLAIRE, IVISCONSIN.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR PENCILS'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,752, dated May 27, 1890.
Application filed'Iebruary 28, 1890. Serial No. 342,050. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN C. GORES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of W'isconsin, have invented a new and useful Safety Attachment for Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in safety attachments for pencils.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, neat, and inexpensive device adapted to be readily fitted upon the end of a pencil, pen, or similar article, and capable of engaging the sides of a pocket and preventing the pencil or pen falling therefrom when a person is in an inclined position.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pencil provided with a safety attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is, a sectional view, the pencil being illustrated in elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the safety attachmentdetached.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a safety attachment that is constructed of suitable materiahpreferably rubber, and is provided with a central bore 2, that is designed to receive the end of a pencil 3, upon which the safety attachment is arranged, and the latter is designed to engage the side of a pocketand prevent the pencil accidentally falling therefrom when the person is in an inclined or stooping position. The end 4 of the safety attachment is conical and tapers to a point, and is adapted to be readily pushed into a pocket, and the said attachment, which is approximately cylindrical, is provided above the conical end 4 with a series of annular flanges 5, that are shouldered in one direction and are adapted to engage the sides of a pocket and cause sufficient friction to prevent the pencil accidentally falling. The sides of the annular rings or flanges 5 opposite the shoulders are inclined toward the inner edge of the next adjacent shoulder.
It will readily be seen that the safety attachment is simple and inexpensive in construction, is adapted to be readily inserted on the end of a pencil, and is capable of engaging the sides of a pocket and preventing the pencil accidentally falling from the pocket when a person is 'in an inclined or stooping position. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A safety attachment for pencils, adapted to be fitted on the end of a pencil and provided with a series of annular flanges capable of engaging the sides of a pocket, substantially as described.
2. A cylindrical safety attachmentfor pencils, provided with a central bore to receive the end of a pencil, and having a series of annular flanges shouldered in one direction, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The cylindrical safety attachment for pencils, provided with a central bore and having a conical end 4, and provided with a series of annular flanges shouldered in one direction and adapted to engage the sides of a pocket, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN G. GORES. Vitnesses:
WM. 11. FRAwLEY, GEO. 'L. BLUM.
