To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. BARTOSZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitching-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to hitching posts, and it has for its object to provide a post which can be installed at any convenient point where a suitable support may be obtained, and which is neat in appearance and effective for the purpose designed.

A further object is to provide a device of the character indicated which can be conveniently installed in curbings and similar constructions, and which can be made to disappear when not in use.

I accomplish these and other objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the upper portion of the device. Fig. 3 shows the upper end of the hollow post with the extensible member at its upper limit. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the upper end of the hollow post, with the extensible member at its lower limit.

In adetailed description of the drawing, the body of the post consists of the tubular shaft 1 of a length required for a suitable hitching post, the lower end of which is closed and pointed at 1 so that it may be forced into the earth or other body into which it is to be anchored, Within the tube 1 is placed a tube 10 having a longitudinal groove 9 along its surface extending approximately to each end, but leaving at each end a shoulder 9*. Upon the upper end of the inner member 10 is secured a cap or head piece 2 which is adapted to seat upon the upper end of the outer tube 1, and which has a reduced central opening 2*, and in the rim of which is secured the ring or handle 3. \Vithin the tube 10 is placed a hitching chain 11, to the lower end of which is attached a weight 12 which will normally hold the chain within, with the snap 5 seated in the flared opening of the cap 2. Adjacent the top of the outer tube 1 is secured a spring bar 4, by means of screws 8. The

bar rises a short distance along the side of the tube and there has formed upon it a lug 7 adapted to extend through the aperture 7 in the tube 1, into the groove 9 of the tube 10. The bar rises from this point and is inclined outwardly to stand opposite the cap 2, to form a hand hold 4.

In use, the post will be set preferably in concrete, with a flared opening 6 to permit the operation of cap 2 and spring bar 4.

WVhen hitching an animal to the post, the extensible member 10 will be raised till the lug 7, sliding in the groove 9, reaches the aperture 13, which it will be caused to enter by the force of the spring. This will sustain the inner member in raised position, and the chain may be withdrawn by the snap 5 which will be engaged in a ring of the bridle, or otherwise as may be desired. Upon releasing the snap, the weight 12 will retract the chain; and by disengaging the lug 7 the tube 10 and chain 11 will disappear within the outer tube 1.

In this manner a convenient and serviceable post is secured, which is always ready for use, when desired, and is always out of the way when not needed.

Having described my invention what I claim is 1. An article of manufacture comprising a tubular body portion adapted to be anchored in the ground, and having an annular seat in its lower portion, an extensible member having a longitudinal groove in one side and perforations leading therefrom, secured therein, and adapted to rest on said annular seat, a spring bar fixed on the outer tube having a lug extending through an aperture therein into the groove and adapted to engage in said perforations, a cap secured on the upper end of the inner tube and adapted to seat upon the outer tube, a flexible hitching element loosely secured in said extensible member, and means for retaining it in inner position.
