Description

V zen of the United States,
claims and illustrated in .PLUMB-B'OB. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 14, 1915. Serial No. 2,232. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OBBO B. BERG, a citiresiding at Ackley, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Bobs, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relatesto plumb bobs, and has for an object to provide a marking pin which is slidably associated with a housing or body, to permit indenting a surface with which the pointed end of the pin contacts, at the same time obviating possibility of distorting the pin by reason of the impact with the surface which is to be marked. I
Another object consists in the production of a plumb bob which is constructed of few, simple, and compact parts and which are so arranged, that the same may be dropped from any distance and yet remain upright and in position to mark the required loca tion; V
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended the accompanying drawings, in which; 1 f
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a plumb bob constructed in accordancewith my invention, illustrating the application of the invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspection view of the pin used in the present invention, and Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the bob,.a portion thereof being broken away to disclose'the pin.
Similar letters refer to similar throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, numeral 1 designates the casing or body portion of my invention shown resting onthe surface 13 to be marked and which is preferably of a cylindrical configuration, formed of brass or other suitable material and provided with a central bore 2 extending longitudinally therethrough. A portion of the body 1, surrounding the bore 2 and adjacent thereto, is cut out to provide an enlarged annular recess 3 at one end of the casing, the wall of which is threaded for engagement with the threaded annular flange of the cap member hereinafter referred to. The shoulder provided by this recess forms a seat or rest for the stop 4, which stop in the present, instance engaged by the palm ofthe hand, latter is brought sharply in contact thereparts comprises a pin' disposedwithin the recess and extending transversely of the bore 2. This pin 4 is primarily intended to pass through the slot of the marking pin described below' and is held stationary within .the recess so as to limit the reoiprocable movement of the marking pin 5.
' The member 5 comprises anjelongated steel core or pm, terminating at one end in a point -6 which by its penetration ofna surface, marks the spot to be found or located thereupon. with anenlarged head 7,jhaving a convex surface so as to'conform toand when the r ori ice.
OIBBO B. BERG, OF ACKLEY, IOWA.
The pin is. further provided be snugly Patented Apr. 11,1916.
with, for exerting pressure upon the pin 7 and causing the spot desired. Positioned a slight distance below the "head 7 and passing trans versely through the 'pin5, is a slot 8 of a depth sufficient to permitof an appreciable marking pin within the loore 2 of. the housing. A longi- V reciprocatory movement of the tudinal opening'9 extends centrally through the head 7 and communicates with the slot.8. to permit the passage of a through, which cord'is adapted to be secured to the stop or limiting pin 4.
A cap 11 having a knurled edge to fathe point to indent and markcord 10 therecilitate adjustment, and provided with, a v
central open ng to permit movement of the pin 5 therethrough, is fitted to the housing 1 so asto retain the separate parts of the invention in assembled relation. It is provided with an annular depending "projection 12, externally threaded andadapted to be inserted in the recess 3 for engagement with the threadedwall thereof. When the cap is thus in place, this projection abuts against the stop 4 and retains the same against displacement from the recess.
Thus, it will be noted that any upward pull exerted upon the cord 10,'will be com'- municated directly to the pin 4, the cord 10 being attached thereto, andas the pin 4 is connected to thehousing 1, by means-of the cap 11, the housing will necessarily move at which time the pin 5 must necessarily be carried upward with the housing.
In operation, the housingl is suspended upward with the cord. The marking pin 5, i
is not affected by any such pull and.
by means of the cord 10, over the surface to be marked, in which position it will be understood that the pointed end 6 of the marking pin is depending externally of the bore 2 and below the housing; the upper terminus of the. slot 8, being in engagement with stop 4:. Upon releasing the cord, the housing drops to the intended location, and the point 6,being in advance of the housing contacts with the surface to be marked, and by weight of its fall, indents the spot to be located. Owing to the free, slidable move-- ment of the pin 5 within the housing, the point 6 thereof is protected against injury or distortion, to which it would undoubtedly be subjected,- were it made integral with the housing. When dropped from a height the weight of the housing 1, combined with the flat surface which it presents to the subjacent surface will tend to hold the device in an upright position, so that to mark the spot thus located, it is but necessary to strike the palm of the hand against the enlarged head of the pin, to cause it to penetrate and thus designate the required point.
hat is claimed is:
1. A plumb bob, including a body, a cap for said body, a pin inserted through said cap and body and capable of free reciprocatory movement therethrough, and means associated with said body for limiting the movement of the said pin.
'2. A plumb bob, including a body, a pin, provided with a slot, and movable within said body, and means associated with said. body and extending through said slot for limiting the movement of the pin within said body. v
3. A plumb bob, including a tubular body, a cap for said body, an elongated pin member inserted through said cap and body and movable therethrough, said pin provided with a slotted upper end, and a stop associated with said body and extending through said slotted end for limiting the movement of the pin within said body.
4. A plumb bob, including a tubular body provided with a recess, an elongated marking pin disposed within said body and movable therethrough, said marking pin provided with av slot extending transversely therethrough, a stop seated in said recess and projecting through said slot to limit the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the movement ofsaid pin, and a cap threaded into said recess and engaging said stop whereby the latter is held in secured position.
A plumb bob, including a housing having a central bore, a marking pin slidable through the bore and having a pointed end for markingsurfaces, a stop arranged in said housing and extending through said bore and marking pin to limit the movement of the latter in the body, said pin having its pointed end extending below the housing when the latter is pendently supported, and means in connection with said stop to pendently support the housing, whereby initial contact of the pin with a subjacent surface is permitted.
6. A plumb bob, including a body, a cap for said body, a pin freely movable through said cap and body, said pin capable of being moved externally of either end of said cap and body, and means within said body for limiting the movement of said pin.
7. A plumb bob, including a body having a threaded annular recess therein, a pin provided with a slot, and freely movable through said body, means passing through said slot for limiting the movement of said pin, and a cap screwed into said recess and abutting said means, said cap having an opening therein to ermit of movement of said pin externally thereof.
8. A plumb bob, including a body having a central bore and a recess formed adjacent one end of said bore, a pin freely reciprocable within said bore and having a slotted upper portion, said pin being further provided with an enlarged head, said head having a convex surface and a central opening passing therethrough for communication with said slotted portion, a cap embracing said pin and fitted into said recess, and
means passing through the slotted portion 9 of said pin for limiting. the movement of the latter, said means engaged between said cap and the base of said recess, whereby displacement from said recess is prevented.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
013130 B. BERG.
