INSECT-BEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7
Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed January 20, 1916. Serial No. 73,219.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l VILLi-ino W. lins'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paso Robles, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in I1'1sect.Beaters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in insect heaters.
The device is intended for the purpose of destroying flies or other insects by striking them against a wall or other flat surface. Ordinarily such devices consist of a handle having attached thereto a beater of thin light material, usually Wire screening.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character in which the beater or swatting element is pivotally connected to the end of a handle, and so constructed as to provide a lever extension beyond its pivotal point adapted to be brought into contact with the wall or ceiling surface so as to effect thrusting of the flat face of the beater directly and truly upon the flat surface and against the insect thereon.
Another object-of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character which is of simple, strong and durable construction,
cheap to manufacture, efi icient and reliable,
in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with this invention showing it in position to operate against a wall surface;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4l4 of Fig. 2.,
The preferred form of the present invention consists of a metal plate which is curved transversely throughout its entire length to form a tubular socket member 1 into which is inserted one end of a cylindrical handle 2 of the commonly used insect beater 3. tending laterally outward from one side of the socket member 1 is a pair of spaced ears t having alined apertures 5, said ears being struck out laterally from the sides of the plate from which the member 1 is formed. Secured to the opposite side of the member 1 near one end thereof in any suitable man-- ner, herein shown by a rivet 6, is an antislipping member in the form of a rubber button 7.
Disposed between the ears 4: is a pair of ears which extend longitudinally from one end of a socket member 9 designed to receive in the other end thereof a suitable cylindrical handle member 10. lhis socket member 0 is formed from a metal plate by curving the same transversely. The ears 8 are offset laterally inward as at 11 to position them in contacting relation to each other and are provided with apertures 12 which are arranged in alinement with the apertures 5 in the ears 4 to facilitate the insertion of a suitable pivot pin therein, herein shown in the form of a bolt 13 having a nut 14: threaded on the free end thereof.
Secured at one end to the socket member 9 in any suitable manner is a coiled spring 15, the other end of which is similarly secured to the adjacent side of the socket member 1 at the end opposite to that carrying'the aforesaid rubber button 7. This spring 15, as may be readily understood, returns the socket members 1 and 9 to their normal positions, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, after the same have been moved relatively to each other in the manner hereinafter described. Extending longitudinally from the pivotally connected end of the member 9 is a lug 16, the free end of which is positioned to engage the adjacent side of the member 1 and limit the relative closing movement of said members, it being understood that this lug 16 acts in the capacity of a stop member.
In use, the device is advanced toward the wall, the rubber button '7 first coming into contact therewith, thereby preventing slipping of the same. ward movement of the handle 10 the heater 3 is moved at an accelerated speed in the direction of the arrow (in Fig. 1) against the wall and insect thereon, thus crushing and destroying the latter.
Upon a further for-v 1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of pivotally connected socket members, one of said socket members being adapted to receive one end of a handle member, the other socket member being adapted to receive the handle of a beater, and a spring connected to said socket members for retaining the same in their relative normal positions.
2. A device of the class described compris-v 7 ing a tubular socket member adapted to receive one end of a handle member, a second tubular socket member adapted to receive the handle of a beater, one end of the first socket member being pivotally connected to said second socket member at a point intermediate the ends thereof, and a coiled spring connected at one of its ends to one of said socket members and at its other end to the other socket member.
3. A device of the class described comprising a tubular socket member adapted to receive one end of the handle of a beater, an
, anti-slipping member secured to one side of said socket member at one end thereof, a second tubular socket member adapted to re- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G.
ceive one end of a handle member, one end of said second socket member being pivotally connected to the intermediate portion of the first socket member, a coiled spring con nected at one of its ends to one of said socket 7 members and at its other end to the other socket member, and a stop secured to one of said socket members for limiting the relative movement of the same.
t. A device of the class described comprising a tubular socket member adapted to receive one end of the handle of a beater, a pair of spaced apertured ears extending laterally outward from one side of said socket member intermediate the ends thereof, a sec- 'ond tubular socket member adapted to receive one end of a handle member, additional aperturcd ears extending longitudinally of said second socket member and disposed between the first mentioned ears, a pivot pin extending through the apertures in said ears for pivotally connecting said socket members together, a coiled spring connected at one of its ends to one of said socket members and at its other end to the other socket member, and a lug extending longitudinally of the second socket member and having its free end positioned to engage one'side of the first socket member for limiting the relative movement of said socket members. 7
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
WILLARD W. KESTER.
