ANDREW J. BAKER, OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
. DRY-SPRAY GUN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 191 '7.
Application filed November 23, 1916. Serial No. 133,081.
- To all w hom may con camp Be it known that I, ANDREW J. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Dry-Spray Guns; and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the.
same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple type of bell mouth gun carried by" a vertical staff and adapted for use in distributing powder over the leaves of trees infested with insects to be exterminated.
With the foregoing general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved gun in use;
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof; and r Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
In the drawing above briefly described,
the numeral 1 has reference to a vertically elongated bodyhaving its upper end increased in size to form a head 2 and having said head formed with a socket 3 opening through its upper end, this end being reduced at 4 and externally threaded to receive an internally threaded ferrule 5 on the lower end of a short bell mouth barrel 6,
Q said barrel being preferably of funnel shape as shown. The barrel 6 is adapted to contain powder to be used in exterminating insects, while the socket 3 is intended to be packed with explosive powder of any suitable manufacture.
A port 7 leads through the lower end of the head 2 and communicates with the socket 3, a boss 8 being provided at the outer end of. said port to receive thereon a percussion cap 9 to be fired by a hammer 10 .pivotally mounted at 11 in a vertical slot 12 with which the body 1 is formed, said slot opening through opposite sides of said body as shown.
A spring 13 is provided for throwing the hammer 10 against the'cap 9, and for holding said hammer retracted against the tension of said spring, a locking lever 14 is prov ded, sald lever being disposed to active position by an appropriate spring 15. The ever 14 may be tripped at will to release the hammer 10 by a trigger 16.
The lower end of the body 1 has formed integrally therewith an externally threaded plug 17 received in a socket 18 on the upper end of a ferrule 19 within which the upper end of a' vertical stafi 20 is secured, said staif be1ng of a length to permit the gun to firelts contents against the under sides of the leaves which are infested with insects to be destroyed. For the purpose of trippmg the trlgger 16 which is in most cases out of reach when the device is in operation, a cord or the like 21 depends from said trigger as shown.
By constructing the improved device in the manner shown and described it may be easlly and inexpensively manufactured and marketed, yet will be an effective tool for dry spraymg, 1t belng particularly advantageous 1n v1ew of the fact that by its constructlon, the insect powder may be directed agalnst the under sides of the leaves, it being here that the insects collect and breed most prolifically. On account of these advantages, the construction shown and described constitutes the preferred form of the device, but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made Without sacrificing the principal advantages.
' I claim:
An insect powder gun comprising a vertically elongated body having its upper end enlarged in the form of a head, said head having in its upper end a cavity-to receive an explosive powder, said end of the head being reduced and externally threaded, a short funnel-shaped barrel having at its lower contracted end an integral ferrule threaded on said reduced end of the head, said barrel being adapted to contain the insect powder, the aforesaid head being formed in its lower end with a port leading from the cavity, and the body having a vertically elongated slot opening through its sides, a hammer mounted in said slot and adapted to strike and explode a percussion mer retracted against the tension of its spring, a trigger for releasing said locking In testimony whereof I have hereunto set member, an externally threaded boss on the my hand in the presence of two subscribing 10 lower'end of the aforesaid body, a. socket in Witnesses. which said boss is received, and a vertical stafl carrying said socket on its upper end,
said staff being of a length toposition the Witnesses: barrel of the gun beneath the leaves of trees JOSEPH D. BYANSKIE, infested with the insects to be exterminated. CLEM J. Nonn.
