Description

INVENTOR Patented Feb. 9, 1892.
(No Model.)
, milled or corrugated surface.
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
vISAAC STERNBERG, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
WATCH-CASE PENDANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,707, dated February 9, 1892.
Application filed September lvl/1, 1891- Se1ialNo.405,583. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IsAAo STEENBEEG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watch-Pendants; and I do hereby declare the following to be a ful-l, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to watch winding and setting devices; and it consists in a novel arrangement of movable members within the pendant, all as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawing, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
The drawing represents, on an `enlarged scale, a vertical or longitudinal section of a watch-stem pendant and crown with a portion of a watch-case, in which- A is the crown, usually made globular, with The lower end is hollowed out, as seen at b, to lighten up its weight and to avoid friction when rotated or moved reciprocally. The crown is provided with a downwardly-extending central hub or post c, which is bored for reception of the stem B. Said stem has an upper annular groove b', into which projects the end of screw c which end acts as a limiting-detent whereby the stem B is prevented from being moved in either direction beyond the lengt-h of said groove b.
C is the pendant, constructed outwardly of the usual form, provided with central bore d for reception of stem B. At one side of the bore d is a slotted recess for reception of the upper end of a straight toe-pointed spring f. Said spring is held in position within the pendant by the screw c', which passes transversely through the upper end of the pendant and the head of spring f, as shown in the drawing, the screw then extending within the annular groove b', composing therein a limiting-detent, as hereinbefore set forth. Below the groove b on the stem B is another annular groove e, the upper ends of the two grooves being at a distanceequal to the length of the spring f. Under the groove eis another V- shaped annular groove g, into which takes the overturned toe i of the spring f when the crown is withdrawn outwardly and the post B projected upwardly to its extreme limit, the device being then in position for winding purposes. Converselywhen the crown is pushed downwardly its progress is limited by the end of the screw c in the position shown in the drawing, and the shank D of the stem B is in position to mesh with attachments to operate the dial-pointers.
The mechanism employed for winding and setting watches is made in various ways. In some watches the Broquet system is used. In others a separate catch has to be released before the watch can be set; but my invention has no reference to any special system. Anyone skilled in the art to which it is allied can attach it to any of the various kinds of stemwinders in the market.
W'hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America,
As a new article of manufacture, a stem winding and setting attachment for Watches, consisting of a pendant having within central bore thereof reciprocating movable stem B, said bore provided with interiorly-slotted recess, having solid head of pointed spring secured therein by screw c passing through pendant and head of spring, the point of screw extending inwardly beyond the spring-head, whereby an under open 'spaceis left in recess, into which lower leaf extension of the spring is free to move to and fro laterally, in combination with stem B, having upper annular groove b', into which extends free end of screw c', limiting its vertical movement, said stem provided with annular groove c, grooves 'b' and c being distance apart equal to length of spring f, and lower V shaped annulaigroove e, into which the toe z' of springf will be projected and withdrawn as the stem isA moved vertically, as and for the purpose intended, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC STERNBERG.
