To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, EZEKIEL HOLMAN, of Sandy, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swordanes, of which the following is a specification.

Ordinarily the Stem of a sword cane, which is hollow to receive the sword or weapon, is separable entirely from the head to which the` o sword or weapon is attached, and when the weapon is desired for defense it is entirely withdrawn from the hollow stem.

The object of my invention is to provide a swordcane in which the sword or weapon and the stem and head are all connected together, and in which the tubular stem is adapted to yield when the sword or weapon is thrust forward, in order to permit the sword or weapon to protrude beyond it.

My improved cane consists, essentially, of a head or handle which has the sword or weapon fixed in it, and which is also provided with a tubular extension having an internal shoulder at the lower end, and a hollow stem which is of smaller diameter than the tubular extension and slides within the same, and is provided with an external shoulder acting in conjunction with the internal shoulder of the extension to limit the outward movement of the stem, and a spring hearing at one end on the head and at the other end on the tubular stem, and which serves to project the stem to shield and cover the sword or weapon until slid back on the sword or weapon in the use of the latter. The stem has at its end a tip, which is perforated for the passage of the sword or weapon, and at the end of the cane is a reinovablecap which is applied for the ordinary use of f. the cane, and is only removed when it is desired to use it as a weapon.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of a cane. embodying my invention, the parts being adjusted for its use as a cane simply; and Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the parts as they would appear after the tubular stem has been driven inward by the thrust.

may be made of metal or other suitable material, and in which the weapon or sword B, which consists of a steel rod pointed at the end, is tirmly secured by ascrew-thread, a', 0r otherwise. The head or handle A has a tu hular extension, A', fixed rigidly thereto, and within this tubular extension is 'free to slide a tubular steun C, which may be made of wood, vulcanite, or other suitable material. The tubular extension A may consist of a metal tube having near the lower end an internal shoulder, c', and the upper end of the tubular stem C is slightly enlarged, so as to forni a shoulder, c, which, by coming to a hearing against the shoulder a', will limit the down ward movement of the tubular stem C relatively to the extension B. Within the tubular extension A,and arranged between the head A and the cnd of the tubular stein C, is a spiral spring, D, which bears at one end against the head A and at the other end against the ,1 tubular stem C. The function of this sprin is to force the tubular stern outward into th position shown in Fig. 1, and when the tubu lar stem is fully projected the point of th A weapon B will project but very slightly be ,.v yond its end. At the end of the stein C, I have represented a tip-piece\,",'which maybe made2 ,l of metal and screwed upon orotherwisemade fast to the stein C, and which is perforated for` narily the tip of the caneis covered by a removable cap, E, which may he screwed upon or otherwise secured to the tip-piece (Y, and this tip may be considered as forming a part 8 of the tubular stem C. lVithin the cap E may be a cushion or pad, e, of lead or other suitable material, which will prevent injury to the point ot' the weapon. "When it is desired to use the weapon for defense, it is only necessary 9o to unscrew or remove the cap E, and by a thrust with the cane the weapon, sword, or rod will be caused to penetrate the object, while the tubular stem C, by reason of its end striking the object, will be forced backward along the sword or weapon B and to the position shown in Fig. 2.

My improved implement may also be ad vantageously employed, when the cap E is removed, for walking upon ice or other hard or slippery surface, in order to avoid falling.

NVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*

1. The combination, with a cane head and a tubular extension, A', projecting therefrom and having near the lower end an internal l shoulder, ofthe Weapon or rod B, fixed iu the head and projecting beyond the tubular extension, the tubular stem C, of smaller diameter than the extension A, and sliding Within the same, and provided at the upper end with an external shoulder, which, in connrction with the shoulder in the tubular extension,'limits the outward movement of the stem, and a spring, D. bearing at one end on the head and serving to project the stem and shield the Weapon or rod, substantially as here-in described.

2. The combination, with the cane-head having the recess or socket a2 and the tubular extension A', of the Weapon or rod B, the tubular sliding` stem C, and the spring seated in the recess or socket aL and bearing on the sliding stem, substantially as herein described.

3. The combination, with the cane-head and its tubular extension, ofthe. weapon or rod fixed in the head, the tubular stem sliding in the said extension and having at the end a tip perforated for the passage of the Weapon or rod, and a removable cap applied over the perforated tip to cover the point of the Weapon, substantially as herein described.
