Description

G. MGELWAIN.
PBNHOLDBR.
Patented Sept. v20, 1892.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE MCELWAIN, OF ENGLEWOOD, ILLINOIS.
PENHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,925, dated September 20, 1892.
Application tiled July 25, 1892. Serial No. 441,174. (No model.) n
, To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MCELWAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Englewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvementsv in penholders; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fully Aexplained,'and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure I represents a central vertical sectional view of my improved penholder. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of t-he same, both views being somewhat enlarged; and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the penholder, which consists of two parts only, being the stem a and the sleeve b. The stem a has the usual kerf c in its end cl, and the same is provided with a reduced portion e, providing two shoulders ff', which are preferably annular and are designed to limit the penholder-stem in its movement, as will be presently explained. The sleeve b is provided with an annular groove g, in which is inserted a ring h, and the latter is held thereby and permitting only a portion thereof to extend beyond said groove, as shown at i in the drawings.
It will thus be observed by reference to the above description and annexed drawings In releasing a pen from the holder the sleeve is forced backward, carrying with it the ring until the latter strikes the shoulder f, forming a stop, when the pen will be released and drop from the holder, after which the sleeve is moved forward and the ring engages the other shoulder f limitingits movement, when a pen can be readily inserted between the end of the stem and sleeve. At the same time it is very simple in operation, durable, and cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The stem having the reduced portion and shoulders and the sleeve having the groove and the ring, said ring adapted to engage said shoulders, Whereby the movement of the sleeve is limited, substantially as described.
2. In a penholder havinga movable sleeve, an inner annular groove, and a ring within said groove, in combination with the stem having shoulders adapted to engage said ring and limit the movement of the sleeve, substantially as described.
3. The penholder described, consisting of stem a, sleeve b, and ring h, said sleeve having groove g and the stem-shoulders f f all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE MCELWVAIN.
