' To all whom, it may concern:
UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
ALEXANDER GUSDORF, OF RANCI-IES or TAOS, TERRITORY or NEW MEXICO.
CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,532, dated April 29, 1890. Application filed May 17, 1888. Serial No. 274,161. (No model.)
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER GU SDORF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ranches of Taos, in the county of Taos, Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimneys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a -full, clear, and exact description of the i11vention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Figure l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on linear, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 1 y, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the removal of soot, ashes, or other deposit from the bottom of a chimney; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combination, as set forth specifically in the claims hereof.
A represents the base of a chimney, which may be built of brick, as indicated, or of other suitable material, and is preferably square in cross-section.
a is a stove-pipe hole.
B B C are the sides, and D the bottom, of a drawer fitting closely within the chimney, and having the upper edges of the sides beveled, as indicated in Fig. 2. The sides B B are slotted, as at b.
c c are stops consisting, preferably, of short bars of wrought-iron passing through the slots b b and into the chimney, whereby the partial withdrawal of the drawer is permitted.
E is the front side of the drawer, hinged by its lower edge to the bottom, preferably as indicated in Fig. 2that isto say, by means of hinges so arranged that when the front is laid down flat its upper side shall be in plane with the upper side or face of the bottom.
The front ends of the sides B B project some distance beyond the plane of the outer face of the front E when closed, in order that when the front is let down, as in Fig. 2, these projecting sides will facilitate the removal of the soot or ashes into a suitable receptacle and without spilling or scattering the same.
E is apull or handle attached to the outer face of the front E, and maybe either a common draw-pull, a staple, a knob, or equivalent. F is a button or locking device of some sort attached to the chimney and serving to maintain the front in a vertical position.
G is a stove-pipe, the vertical section of which is a short distance from the chimney and parallel therewith.
From the above it will be readily understood that a drawer of this description is very convenient, from the fact, among others, that it can be pulled out so far as to permit the ready removal of ashes without necessity of taking down the stove-pipe and without danger of in any manner disturbing the pip-e, from the fact that the stops 0 0 limit the forward and outward movement of the drawer, and therefore prevent any part of it from being pulled violently into contact with the pipe.
I am aware that a soot-drawer having a bottom with sides and front rigidly'attached thereto is old; but with such construction the drawer must be removed bodily before it can be emptied, or else the. ashes must be removed over its sides by the use of some implement adapted to scoop them outan operation which is objectionable under such an arrangement of stove-pipe as will prevent the entire removal of the drawer.
I am also aware that it is common to provide refrigerators with doors hinged by their lower edges directly to the refrigerator-body; but my invention differs radically from such construction, in that, among other things, when the door is let down and the bottom and sides drawn out a short distance, the presence ,of the side projecting from the wall of the chimney greatly facilitates scraping the ashes into a suitable receptacle without permitting the ashes to fall between the edge of the receptacle and the outer face of the chimney.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with a chimney, of a soot-catcher consisting of a drawer having a hinged front, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a chimney, of a soot-catcher consisting of a drawer having a hinged front and stop to limit the outward movement of the drawer, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
. ALEXANDER GUSDOBF.
