U ITED STA'I'ES PATENT OFFICE CARL F. EGKSTEIN AND LOUIS J URGENS, OF PRESCOTT, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBNED CHlMNEY-CLEANRS AND FlRE-SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128376, dated June :25, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, CARL F. ECKSTEIN and LoUIs J URGENS, of Prescott, in the county of the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon. p
This invention consists, first, in the construction of the chimney itself and its attachments; and second, in the device employed for cleaning the same.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a front elevation of our invention, Fig. 2, a sectional side elevation and Fi g. 3, a View of the scraper proper.
To enable others shilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now proceed to describe'fully its Construction and operation.
A represents the chimney constructed in the usualnanner, excepting that it is provided with the opening a and recess a', as shown. B represents a fire-board constructed of suitable material, which is adapted to close the opening a, and is provided with the orifice B', in which is permauently secured the sleeve c and opening b, which is closed 'ordinarily by the door 0 the lower edge of the latter being held by a recess in the fire-board, and the upper edge by a latch or other proper fastening. If desired a ventilator, 0 may be located in the door, by means of which the foul air may be drawn off' from the room, and also the draught of the chinney improved. D represents the scot-box, which is adapted to rest in the recess a' at the foot of the chimney and receive the soot-both that which runs down the walls in avertical condition and that which falls down the chimney. By removing the door in the fire-board the scot-box at any time may be readily removed with its contents.
E represents a section of stove-pipe adapted to be secured in the sleeve o, which pipe is provided at its elbow With an opening, e, in line with its horizontal portion, by means of which opening it can be readily cleaned without taking it down. G represents the cleaner for the chimney. This may be located in such manner as to be operated from below or above, and, if desired, itmay be left permanently in the chimney. It consists of a rod, which may be of any proper length, and which, if desired, may be made in sections adapted to be'screwed together, which rod is 'provided with plates g g', one of which is adapted by its position upon the rod to bear against the front side of the 'chimney and not touch the opposite side, and
the other to bear against the other in a similar manner. By means of 'this construction the movement of the rod will thoroughly clean both sides of the chimney, while at the same time the egress of smoke is not interfered with.
By means of the construction described the chimney and pipe may be readily cleaned at any time without serious inconvenience and trouble.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A chimney-cleaner adapted to touch both sides of the chimney at once without interfering with the egress of smoke, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the removable fireboard, the removable scot-box, the recessed chimney, and a cleaner adapted to remain permanently in the chimney and to be operated from below, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 29th day of March, 1872.
