Description

N. A. PENLAND.
Ventilator.
No. 202,960. Patented April 30,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
N. ALEXANDER PENLAND, OF ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTI LATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,960, dated April 30, 1878; application filed March 9, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. ALEXANDER PEN- LAND, of Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in ventilators; its object being to provide a device by which rooms may be cleared or purified of all unhealthy air and gases arising from the use of stoves.
To this end my invention consists in a collar made of funnel shape, which is to be placed in the hole in the wall or ceiling through which the stove-pipe is to pass. Said funnel 0r collar is provided with arms or flanges on its inner surface, to connect with aring through which the stove-pipe is to pass, and which holdsitfirmly to its properplace. On the mouth or outer edge of the funnel is a rim or flange, by which it is fastened to the wall or ceiling.
This ventilating-funnel may be made straight, oblong, or any shape, so that the impure air or unhealthy gases may escape, this funnelshaped ventilator being placed in the wall or ceiling, with its apex even with the outlet or mouth of the stove-pipe, thereby causing the impure air to come in contact with the heated air and smoke from the stove, causing the same to be carried off with the smoke and hot air.
My invention is so arranged, by means of stays or arms on its inner surface, as to connect with a ring, by which the stove-pipe is held at a suitable distance from the inner edge of the funnel, so as to give sufficient space for draft to carry off the impure gases, and also to prevent the heat from the stove-pipe ignitin g any wooden wall or ceiling through which the same might have to pass, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, the letter A represents the collar or funnel, provided with a flange or rim, B, at its mouth, and is also provided with stays or arms 0 C G on its inner surface, to connect with the ring D, which holds the stovepipe E in place, and at a proper distance from the funnel A, so as to admit a current of air to pass freely on all sides of the stove-pipe to the chimney or flue, from whence the same is carried off. The draft through the ventilator A is to be regulated by adjusting the mouth of stove-pipe E with the apex or end of the funnel A next to the flue, so as to procure more or less draft through the ventilator.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'111 a ventilator for the purpose of purityingrooms or dwelling-houses, an apparatus, A, made in funnel shape, which is provided with inner arms 0 G O, fastened to a ring, D, which holds the stove-pipe E firmly, and at its proper distance from the inner edge of the ventilator, so as to allow of a free current of air to pass from the room through the latter and into the flue or chimney whence it is carried off, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
N. ALEXANDER PENLAND.
