JOHN STOV ANDERSON, OF CORSICANA, TEXAS.
-FEED-TROUGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 472,971, dated April 19, 1892. v Application filed September 5, 1891. Serial No. 404,841. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN Srow ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Feed- Trough, of which the following is a speciication.
The invention relatesto improvements in portable feed racks and troughs.
The object of the present invention is to provide a portable feed rack and trough adapted to hold a quantity of feed and to discharge the same as is found necessary.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portable feed rack and trough embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the hay-rack.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
l designates a platform, which is provided at each side with a feed-trough 2 and which is mounted upon runners 3, so as to be portable; but it will be readily understood that wheels may be substituted for runners.
Arranged at each end of the platform is a tapering bin or hopper 4, having inwardlyinclined sides 5 and provided at the lower ends of the sides with discharge-openings 6, Opposite which are arranged adjustable slides 7, adapted to regulate the sides of the openings. The slides 7 'are secured in their adjustment by set-screws 8 and are held in frictional contact with the inclined bars 9, which are arranged on the outer faces of the sides 5 and are recessed at their lower ends, and arranged on the outer edges of the bars 9 are strips 10, which are also held in frictional contact with the bars 9 by the said setscrews 8. The bins or hoppers may be entirely closed at their sides by hinged doors ll, closing against triangular pieces l2, arranged at the sides of the bins or hoppers and forming a straight vertical jamb. The outer end walls 13 of the hoppers or bilis are provided with doors 14, by which the hoppers or bins are supplied with feed.
A feed-rack 15 is arranged between the hoppers or bins, and its sides 16 are composed of slats and are provided at their lower ends with openings and sliding doors 17, arranged to close or partially close the openings.
The bins and the hay-rack are provided with a sheet-metal roof 18, having at its sides eaves-troughs 19 and provided with a sliding section 20, arranged over the feed-rack,where by the same is filled.
It will be seen that a simple and comparatively ineXpensive feed trough and rack which is capable of holding feed within easy reach of stock is produced.
The sliding doors 17 are composed of bars 21, which are arranged at intervals and are located in the spaces formed by the slats 22 of the feed-rack 15. These slats serve as guides for the sliding doors and have their lower ends connected by cross-bars 23, and the bars 21 of the sliding doors are connected at their ends by horizontal strips 24,.which are arranged on the outer faces of the slats 22 and secure the doors to the rack. The upper horizontal strip rests upon the cross-bar 23 when the door is closed, and the lower horizontal strip limits the upward movement of the doors. l/Vhen the doors are open or raised, they fill and close the spaces between the slats at the p ointwithin the reach of animals and prevent the same pulling hay through the spaces formed by the slats and compel them to eat out of the trough and draw the hay through the doors.
Any suitable means may be provided for holding the doors open in their adjustment.
IOO
bars, whereby the slides are secured in their ro adjustment, and the hinged doors arranged at the sides of the bins, substantiallyas described.
In testimony that I claim' the foregoingas my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
Jox-IN sTo'W ANDERSON.
