Description

UNITED sTATEsy PATENT i EEreE.
ISAAC L. ROSS, OF BOWBELLS, NORTH DAKOTA.
FEED-BOX.
Application filed November 7, 1906. Serial No. 342,424.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac L. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residingI at Bowbells, inA the county of Ward and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates certain newA and useful improvements in feed boxes of that type in which the i box is divided into two compartments, one being a storage compartment for a quantity of grain and the other a feeding compartment, provision being made for supplying the feeding compartment with a small quantity of grain at a time, and the partition between the two compartments being designed for actuation by the nose of the horse or other animal feeding so that the requisite flow of material from the storage compartment to the feeding compartment may be maintained, but without any waste.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved feed box of this character which will be very simple in construction and cheap te manufacture, as well as durable and efficient in operation7 and the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts hereinafter specifically described and partly pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction ofthe means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description `and accompanying drawings7 in which:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved feed box. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the lid opened. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the partition or cut off shown detached.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved feed box comprises a base plate or bottom I adapted to be secured to the manger or stall by any desired fastening means and 2 designates the opposite sides of the box which are provided on their inner faces with preferably inclined grooves 3 in transverse alinement with each other. 4 designates a partition er cut off which is in the form of a plate extending across the box with its ends fitted to slide within the grooves 3. The said grooves terminate at such a distance from the bottom of the box as to normally hold the cut off in spaced relation to the bottom. The cut off 4 constitutes in effect the dividing wall for the box and provides a. storage compartment A and a feeding compartment B within the box, The storage compartment A is preferably provided with a lid 5 so that it may be closed when it receives its quantity of feed. Prefer- Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
ably a false bottom G is secured within the storage compartment A and slopes from the outer end thereof down towards the partition or cut off 4 with its lower end terminating contiguous to the lower edge of the said cut off.
By this means the feed tends to move by gravity towards the cutoff and out through the space underneath the lower edge of the latter.
The cut off 4 is provided on that side which is located in the compartment B, with a ledge 7 which may be formed integrally therewith if desired. This ledge is preferably triangular in cross section with its thickest end lowermost and terminates above the lower edge of the cut Off so as to produce a downwardly facing shoulder 8 above the lower edge of the cut off.
In the practical operation or use of my improved feed box the animal will stick his nose in the feed compartment B and in the ordinary operation of eating, will raise the cut off 4 by his nose engaging the shoulder S of the said cut off. By this means the feed will be allowed to flow in a desired quantity from the storage compartment into the feeding compartment and a sufficient amount of feed will he automatically brought into a convenient position to be eaten by the animal, without any waste of the feed. As the lid 5 extends over the upper edge of the cut off 4 it limits the upward free movement of the cut off while at the same time it is to be noted that the cut off 4. may be removed from the box when the lid is open.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings it is seen that I have provided a very simple construction of feed box, in which the sliding cut off mayreadilybe raised by the animals nose so as to obtain the feed in the proper quantities.
Having thus described the invention, what is claime d as new is:
'.lhe heroin described feed box, comprising a bottom plate. side walls supported on said bottom plate, the said walls being provided with oppositely facing grooves terminating a short distance from the bottom plate, a transversely extending cut off mounted to slide in said grooves und dividing the box into a storage compartment and a feeding compartment. the said cut olf being of such height that its upper edge terminates below the upper edge of the box when the cut oll rests at the bottom of the grooves. and a lid adapted to close the upper end of the storage compartment and of a size to extend over the upper ends of the grooves, whereby the said lid will limit the upward movement of the cut oil and prevent its removal from the bex so long as the lid remains closed, although permitting' the cut oil to be removed upon openingl the lid.
ln testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
