ATTEST:

UNITED STATE-S PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. ARNOLD, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING SOFA OR SETTEE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,483, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed May 9, 1889. Serial No. 310,176. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement-in Folding Sofas orSettees; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that type of sofas or settees that are constructed in sections hinged together and capable of being unfolded so as to increase the resting'surface in a twofold manner; and the present improvement has for its object to provide a sofa or settee having a compact form and occupying but little room when folded together for use as a seat, and which can be readily unfolded to form an extended resting or reclining surface when required. I attain such object by the construction of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved sofa or settee in a folded condition; Fig. a similar view of the same in an unfolded condition, and Fig. 3 a similar view of the same in a partly-unfolded condition.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
As illustrated in the drawings, my present invention consists in the formation of a sofa or set-tee with counterpart arm-rests E E, arranged centrally, as shown, and the top section A, divided centrally in to two sections F F, hinged at their outer ends to the ends of the lower section B, with their arm-rests E E adapted to form the outer supporting feet or rests for such sections F F when the same are unfolded, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, to form an elongated resting-surface double the length of the settee in its ordinary closed condition, as represented in Fig. 2.
The resting or seating surface of the sections A, B, F, and F can be of any usual nature, either caned, upholstered, or other wellknown type of seating.
By iny improved construction, as above set forth, a compactly-arranged sofa or settee for day nse is provided, which for sleeping purposes or a demand for extra seating capacity can be extended to a double capacity, or the length of a bed, thus providing an article that will occupy but little room when not required for sleeping or like purposes.
I am aware that prior to my invention chairs have been made in sections hinged together so as to unfold and form abench of extended length. I therefore make no claim to any such construction, broadly; but
VVhat-I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A folding sofa or 'settee formed of a lower main section B and an upper section A, divided into sections F F, hinged at their outer endsto the ends of the section-B, so as to unfold longitudinally, and provided with arn1 rests E E, that constitute supporting-legs for the outer ends of the sections F F when the same are unfolded, essentially as herein described.
In testimony whereof witness my hand this 7th day of May, 1889.
CHARLES ARNOLD.
In presence of GEORGE I-I. ARTHUR, F. HORAN.
