IMPROVEMENT IN SOFA-BEDSTEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 185,802, dated December Q6, 1876; application filed April 26, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUeUsT TowsKI, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa Beds or Bed- Lounges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, suflicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciieation, in which- Fgure 1 is a front view of the sofa or lounge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same converted into a bed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section in line x fr, Fig. 3.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.

My invention consists of the body of the sofa with a rim partly out away to allow an unbroken support for the mattress, and to show the ornamental edges of the same when the parts are folded as a sofa, in combination with the head-rest and supporting-legs, forming together an improvement in sofa-bedsteads.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body or frame of the sofa or lounge, to which is hinged the seat-frame B, which carries the head or arm rest C, and is adapted to be swung out and form a horizontal eXtension of the frame A, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4.

From the head and foot of the upper side of the seat-frame B vthere rise legs or supports D D, which are firmly secured to said frame, and so arranged that when the frame is extended its front end will be steadily supported by said legs.

The leg D is so disposed that when the parts are in their normal position it constitutes a longitudinal extension of the back E, as seen in Figs. l and 2, and in order to prevent tilting of the seat a latch and pin, a b, or other fastening, may be employed to lock the seat to the back.

It will be seen that the legs are always in position to support the seat-frame when the latter is swung over, and when the parts are folded or present the appearance of an ordinary sofa or lounge the leg D, as such is not observable, as it constitutes an extension of the back E, is not in the way, and has no loose connection with the seat-frame.

Rims d extend around the lower side ofthe seat-frame and upper side of the body A, so that when the sofa or lounge is converted into a bedstead the space within the rims will receive the mattress or bed-clothes, and the rims confine the same.

The rims are cut away, as at e c', at adjacent sides of the seat-frame and body A, so that no upright obstruction is presented at what will be the middle of the bedstead, whereby the mattress will lie Hat and uniform from side to side.

When the parts are folded as' a sofa the space formed by the cut-away rim will be occupied by the side of the mattress, so as to show the ornamental edges thereof and prevent a gap at the front of the frame.

Within the body A, below the seat, there is fitted a sliding drawer, F, for reception and storage of bed-clothes, Ste.

It will be seen that the upholstery of the seat and head or arm rest is not altered, and it does not require removal in order to convert the sofa or lounge into a bedstead.

The back E and leg D may be so constructed that the latter will form a continuation of the former similar to the leg D but Whether said leg Dl is in front of the back E, or is a side continuation thereof, it serves to keep the upholstered head-rest from contact with the floor, thus preserving the upholstery, preventing weight thereon and consequent yielding, and providing a iirm support for the head end of the seat-frame.

I am aware that the legs D D are not new, and, therefore, disclaim them.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, the sofabed, consisting of the body A, hinged seatframe B, rest C, fixed legs D D', cut-away rims d, and drawer F, all constructed, combined, and operating as set forth.
