Description

UNITED STATES PATENT A OEEICE.
JAMES K. FAIRBANK, OF WAUPUN, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4I,764, dated March 1, 1864.
' proved Pump; and I do hereby declare the following a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon, in Which- Figure lis an external representation ot' the pump, and Fig. 2 a vertical section through the center thereof.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I take the ordinary pump stock and bore it of sufficient diameter to admit a. glass, stone, or metallic cylinder, A, said cylinder being secured to the stock by cement B. I also employ the metallic strap D on the upper portion of the pump-stock to prevent the same from splitting, to Which it is ever liable, and at the same time furnishing the best mode of fastening the handle,v the straps D crossing the pump in one direction, as represented in the drawings, and fastened by bolts f f at right angles to said straps, and passing through the stock from side to side.
The pump as thus constructed is much more durable, the water purer, and its operation easier and repair less frequent than the ordinary pump requires. The plunger U can be inserted or Withdrawn at any time Without disturbing the pump unless it is a very deep Well.
I am aware that it is not new to line the interior of a pump-stock with a material more ing and retaining a smoother surface; but,l my invention differs from others of its class in that the interior cylinder is adj usted to its position by means of an intermediate layer of cement, which, with the interior cylinder, rests upon the next lower length or section 'ot' the pump stock, Whichtits into that containing the inner cylinder, as shown in the drawings.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pump having an interior cylinder adjusted in the manner set forth, and also the bandsB B and bolts ff, arranged to strengthen the upper part of the stock and afford bear- `ings for the handle, all as shown and described.
