UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOSMAS ROTH, OF ROSSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,420, dated October 17, 1876; application filed May 26, 1876. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. ROTH, of Rossville, in the county of Clinton, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Valves; and do hereby declare that the, following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a valve and valve seat for pumps, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this speoification,Figure 1 represents a side view 5 Fig. 2, a vertical section, and the other views show top and bottom of the valve-frame.
In the figures, A represents either a portion, of the stock of a wooden pump or a wooden barrel, which is secured in same. B represents a metallic valve-frame, which consists of the sleeve D, the wings O O, the flange e, and the seat a, all cast or made in one piece. flange e and the seat a are both made annular. The seat has a flat bearing-surface, as seen. The frame is secured to the barrel, through the flange e, by means of screws. The wings O O extend down into the barrel, and being on opposite sides of the sleeve D, and fitting snugly the chamber of the barrel,.keep the valve-frame securely in position. F represents a domeshaped block, to the under side of which is secured the leather disk I, which The block and leather form the valve. The bottom of the dome is made flat, so that the valve will fit closely to the seat a. E represents a screw-stem, which passes through the sleeve D, and then through the block J. This stem has a head upon its lower end, and a screw upon that portion which passes through the block J. m represents a nut below the block, and at one above the block, by means of which the stem may be regulated with reference to the lower end of the sleeve and the block, for enlarging or decreasing the water-space between the seat and the valve. The sleeve D acts as a guide for the stem E.
By this arrangement and construction the valve is made to fit snugly and closely to its seat, and should sand or gravel stop upon the seat it will be washed out by the next movement of the pump-rod.
Having thus fully describedmy invention,
'what I claim is April, 1876.
