SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,119, dated December 10, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, SIDNEY S. UNDEEWooD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ea'ston, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle- Backs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, Which Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to handle-racks for supporting all classes of articles provided with handles-such as canes, umbrellas, or those articles that are made in the shape of bars or rods; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings,forming part of this specification, in Which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of a handle-rack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a portion of a handle in placein the rack.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a frame or bar of wood or other suitable material, Which is provided with an interior rectangular recess or mortised portion B, the recess B having an outlet leading out at one side of the frame orbar. lVithin the recessed portion is pivoted a rubber-faced or leatherfaced camshaped lock D, Which is provided with a movable pivotal shaft E, Which may be shifted from one to another of a series of pairs of aligned bearing-holes F,the novable bearing passing through a centrally-located bearingshoulder G on the face of the locking-cam op- Serial No. 314,648. The body of the handle-rack is provided with a seat or opening H, which is ooncaved out to receive an umbrella-handle, a canehandle, or a similar handle that is designed to be held in the rack.

It is only necessary to insert the article to be held in the rack into the opening in front of the cam-lock or cam-holder, When the Weight of the article-such as a cane or umbrella--Will draw down upon the pvoted cam and cause it to grip and hold the article in place in the rack. The leather-covered or rubber-covered face of the cam saves the article from abrasion. The locking-cam can be shifted from one center or set of perforations to another, so that itwill fit articles of larger and smaller sizes, as may be required. The face of the cam is preferably convex in cross-section, and also the covering or facing of rubber or leather.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein-described handle-rack, consisting of the bar or frame having the concave seat, rectangular recess, and series of bearing-openings, and the cam pivoted in one of the series of openings and adapted to clamp the handle and retain the same in the concave seat, substantially as described.
