C. JAENIGn HINGE.
@wi/www3 N. nena Pnafvumognphnr, vlamingen. o. c.
Patented Oct. 1, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CARL AENIG, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MAX PAULY, OF SAME PLACE.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,093, dated October 1, 1889,
Application filed March 6, 1889. Serial No. 302,164. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CARL JAENIG, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvementin 5 Hinges; andI hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to the class of hinges; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices, which I shall hereinafter io fully describe and claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my hinge. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of saine. Fig. 3 shows the application of the hinge to a stepr5 ladder.
A is a strap adapted to be screwed or other-V wise secured to one of the parts to be hinged.
B is a similar strap to be secured to the opposing part. Upon the strap A is formed or zo secured a disk a, and upon the strap B, but on its opposite side, is formed or secured adisk l). These disks project sufficiently to overlap the opposite straps, and they are united centrally by a pivot pin or bolt C. In one of the 25 disks is made an elongated slot` D, through which passes athumbscrewE. By loosening this screw the tivo straps may be moved apart or brought together, turning about the pin or bolt C as a center, and by tightening the screw 3o the hinge is locked and the straps are held in the position to which they are adj usted.
Although this hinge may be applied to many purposes, I have herein illustrated it in connection with a step-ladder, in which F is one Y of its sides, and F is the other. To these sides 3 5 the straps A and B are screwed, the Wood being cut away suitably for the inner disk. The disks overlapping the opposite straps or plates of the hinge provide guides in which said straps or plates accurately move and add 4o strength to the hinge, which is therefore well adapted for such purposes as ladders. Thev upper adjacent edges a and b of the straps or of the sides, being cut at anysuitable bevel and coming in contact with each other, may 45 be made to form a positive stop to limit the outward play of the hinge, and the limit of opening of the hinge maybe therefore defined by cutting the said edges to any desired angle.
At all intermediate points the set-screWEWill 5o hold the hinge.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` An adj ustablehinge consisting of the straps 5 5 A B, the disks a b,secured to or formed With said straps on relatively Opposite sides, Whereby each disk overlaps the opposite strap, the central pivot pin or bolt @,nniting the disks, the elongated slot in the overlapping portion 6o ot' one disk, and the sensoreiv passing through said slot, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CARL JAENIG.
